Amidst all this talk about returning to ancient things and methods practiced by the Desert Fathers and all, it occurred to me last night that Paul was actually the first 'desert father.'
17Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus.
18Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.
Galatians 1
Arabia...that is the desert. There he was being trained and prepared for his ministry.
Meanwhile all the nice contemplatives always talk about going 'back' to the teachings of the Desert Fathers, who used mantra meditation prayer methods and lived hundreds of years after the apostle Paul and the writing of the New Testament.
Today Lighthouse Trails posted an exerpt from Ray Yungen's book A Time of Departing called Who Are the Desert Fathers? Check it out HERE.
