Set Me Free

I came across this powerful little skit, quite by accident. There are various versions of this one on youtube, but the one I am posting is, I think, the best one. This is dedicated to all my friends who are trying to set themselves free from their chains. Some of these are the couch surfers I know, who are depending on programs like the 12 steps of AA and good deeds - all human efforts - to temporarily elevate themselves from their circumstances and addictions. They get up, they fall down, they get up, they fall back down. Others are trapped in their partying lifestyle, prisoners of choices made long ago, lured by the deception called the fellowship of the pub. They cannot see that this 'happiness' which they base their existence on is as diseased as their livers. Then there are the ones who are stuck in the doldrums of life, disillusioned by the idea that hard work and success brings happiness, only now realizing that their accomplishments have not brought them satisfaction or peace.

The sad thing is, these friends all have the knowledge of the truth but they have not surrendered their lives. They are all walking in their own strength, under the power of the Prince of this world, trudging through life wearing the same invisible heavy chains. If only they would reach out to the only One who has the power to release them from their bondage. His Name is Jesus Christ, and He came to set the captives free!

On the back cover of The Green Bible, Eugene Petersen's endorsement says this is “an urgent agenda for the Christian community.”

Really? Is that what Jesus meant in Mark 16:15 when He said to them, " Go into all the world and preach the (green?) gospel to all creation"?

They say that the Green Bible (greenletterbible.com) is the first sustainable Bible (never mind the fact that it is Jesus who sustains all things). Along with some big name backers like Tutu, McLaren, The Sierra Club, the Humane Society, and the National Council of Churches, it also includes essays by N.T. Wright and Pope John Paul II. Oddly, there is no mention of David Suzuki and Al Gore, but who knows, maybe the Green Bible is on their green Christmas list.

Another Book about Another Jesus

Someone sent me an interesting link to a Larry King interview of Deepak Chopra on his new book called Jesus: A Story of Enlightenment. Watch this interview here:

Obviously, this is another Jesus, but I think what struck me as I was listening to this interview was that many of the things he said would have fit very nicely into the theme of another book I recently read (but never finished reviewing) about another Jesus, called Stricken by God.

Kids and Yoga

No, they shouldn't. But they are. Here in Vancouver B.C., an organization called Yoga 4 Kidz (www.yoga4kidz.ca/about-us.php) says:

The Yoga4Kidz Society is committed to creating new horizons of integrated body-mind-social fitness through the promotion of yoga programs for children in their schools, communities and homes.

Maybe they’ve never read the American Yoga Association’s statement on the dangers of children doing Yoga exercises:

Yoga and Children

Yoga exercises are not recommended for children under 16 because their bodies’ nervous and glandular systems are still growing, and the effect of Yoga exercises on these systems may interfere with natural growth. Two of my great teachers, Rama and Lakshmanjoo, advised me of the dangers that Yoga asans may pose for young children. Children may safely practice meditation and simple breathing exercises as long as the breath is never held. These techniques can greatly help children learn to relax, concentrate, and reduce impulsiveness. Children trained in these techniques are better able to manage emotional upsets and cope with stressful events.

There is no doubt that Yoga postures (asans) and breathing techniques affect the physical body. People these days commonly accept the fact that such therapies as acupressure, neuromuscular massage, and reflexology can have systemic effects due to pressure applied to certain areas of the body. The physical basis for the effects of Yoga asans may be related. The asans and breathing techniques provide a deep massage and strong compression of the parts of the body where endocrine glands are located. Many Yoga stretches seem to target the nerves in the legs, arms, neck, and spine.

In sum, our position is that growth is in large measure controlled by the glandular system. It is a vastly complicated process, and the powerful physical and mental effects of Yoga asans may interfere with natural growth.

Meanwhile, as previously blogged, the Yoga program is going on as planned in the B.C. school system this fall. Many of my friends have asked that their children be excluded from the Yoga sessions. Unfortunately, they are the minority.

Strange Thing to Remember

I suppose it is a strange thing to be told to remember if you think about it...

This is one of the shortest verses in the Bible: Luke 17:32 “Remember Lot’s wife.”

It is also a very strange verse in that we would normally be encouraged to remember people who achieved greatness or did great exploits for God. But Lot’s wife never did anything great. In fact, we know nothing about her and do not read anything about her until she turned around to look at Sodom burning. We don’t even know her name – she is just “Lot’s wife.”
