Too Much Bible Study?

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15

The more you read, the more you learn...

Well, I just learned something quite interesting from reading something that Mr. Peterson (author of The Message) has been quoted to say...
“Why do people spend so much time studying the Bible? How much do you need to know? We invest all this time in understanding the text which has a separate life of its own and we think we’re being more pious and spiritual when we’re doing it….[Christians] should be studying it less, not more. You need just enough to pay attention to God….I’m just not at all pleased with the emphasis on Bible study as if it’s some kind of special thing that Christians do, and the more the better.”

From–”A Conversation with Eugene Peterson,” “Mars Hill Review,” Fall 1995, Issue No. 3, pgs. 73-90

Now, to all those Christians who love to read The Message paraphrase by this man...does this not bother you?

Hmm...sounds strangley Warrenish...
The last thing many believers need today is to go to another Bible study. They already know far more than they are putting into practice” (RW, p 231, PDL)

Reading the Bible *on your own* is cause for division. period. That's why no one ever did it until about 150 years ago...heck, literacy was a paltry 5% when Luther invented his doctrine of sola scriptura. We are all different people, making private interpretation (and private interpretation of the Spirit that you privately claim has ok'ed your private interpretation) inevitable.

Your blog is exhibit 'A'.

To get serious, though, I truly pray that you come to an understanding of how to rectify the situation because we can both agree that your method isn't working. You seem to devote most of your day to correcting people who think differently than you simply because they are employing the same sola scriptura method as you are...and the cycle continues. Let's get to the root of the problem for once.

Read Erasmus as a good example rather than Luther.
