Time to Think about those Books

You hear so many things these days about the rights of parents being taken away and certain educational curriculum being imposed on us. These are not very good things, but fortunately we have much to be thankful for here in the province of British Columbia. Our government has some of the best homeschool friendly laws that you will find anywhere, which shows that they trust parents to look out for the best interests of their kids.

Basically, according to the School Act, parents in our province have two choices. They can enroll or register, but legally, they must do one or the other. If you enroll your child in a public or private school via correspondence or distance learning, all curriculum is secular (I think it's different if you enroll in a private Christian school). All work is supervised by a teacher and accountable to the government. The other option that many homeschooling parents prefer is to register at a school of their choice, through whom they will receive the appropriate books and things. When a student is registered, their work is parent supervised.

According to Bill 67, every parent in our province has the legal right and freedom to choose the educational option that they deem to be right for their children. The deadline for registering your children as home education learners is September 30th, which is just over a month from now incase you are still trying to decide. You need to re-register ever year by this date.
