Is Harry the Chosen One?
As Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince opens, we are once again reminded of the characteristics that make him something of a Christ figure.

Uh...hullo. I don't think so. According to a puny little comparison chart on beliefnet.com, some folks have concluded that Harry Potter has fulfilled similar prophecies. But truthfully, these few fictional things can NOT even come close, and are not even worthy to be compared with the Messianic prophecies concerning Jesus Christ. Unless, of course, this is the spirit of the anti-Christ figure. In my humble opinion, to compare a pop hero of the cult of children's witchcraft with Jesus the Messiah is pretty much a blasphemous thing to do. But then again, it's not surprising, as today we are seeing a lot of compromising Christians praising J.K. Rowling and God in the same breath for the genius of the Harry Potter books, etc. (see here for example).

Summer Time and Bible Study

I just came home from summer time Bible study and outdoor worship in the park. It was AWESOME! Why choose between the beach or the pews when you can have both? Anyways, thought this was perhaps an interesting thing to read regarding such things...
It is Vacation Bible School time again, when millions of children visit churches and spend week nights doing crafts and singing songs and hopefully learning lasting messages from the Bible. If parents plan things well, their kids could probably catch a VBS every week until school starts.
Yet, while church activity for kids might rise during July and August, summertime is notorious for empty pews when Sunday comes. The beckoning of the beach is a powerful distraction. Which is why the summer is a good time to start praying about and planning for a home Bible study....

The 9th of Av

Beginning tonight at sunset on the Hebrew Calendar is Tisha B'Av, the annual fast day named for the 9th of the month of Av. It's the conclusion of three weeks of sorrow for the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. In fact, not just one, but two temples were destroyed on the same date, 656 years apart. This day has been called the saddest day in Jewish history.

More here:
http://www.jewfaq.org/holidayd.htm

And that is not the only thing has happened on this day. Here are some interesting things...
What happened on the Ninth of Av?

Picture this: The Israelites are in the desert, recently having experienced the miraculous Exodus, and are now poised to enter the Promised Land. But first they send out a reconnaissance mission, to assist in formulating a prudent battle strategy. The spies return on the eighth day of Av and report that the land is unconquerable. That night, the 9th of Av, the people cry. They insist that they’d rather go back to Egypt than be slaughtered by the Canaanites. G-d is highly displeased by this public demonstration of distrust in His power, and consequently that generation of Israelites never enters the Holy Land. Only their children have that privilege, after wandering in the desert for 40 years.

The 9th of Av would turn out to be a challenging day for our people throughout history. The Mishnah1 enumerates five sad events that occurred on this day:

1. The abovementioned episode (in the year 1313 BCE).
2. The destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem (423 BCE).
3. The destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem (69 CE).
4. The conquest of the city of Betar by the Romans. This brought to an end the Bar Kochba rebellion (133 CE). The city was pillaged and hundreds of thousands of Jews were slaughtered.
5. The plowing of the Temple Mount by the Romans, one year after the conquest of Betar.

And that’s not all. The Jews were expelled from England in 1290 on - you guessed it - Tishah b’Av. In 1492, the Jews were expelled from Spain. King Ferdinand decreed that by the end of July, Spain should be Judenrein. They were then given two days extra, until the second of August, the 9th of Av. The expelled Jews were now susceptible to capture, murder, looting, and wild beasts—both the four-legged and two-legged varieties. Word War I was declared on the 9th of Av in 1914. This war ultimately led to the political and economic upheavals which caused the Bolshevik revolution and the Holocaust.

This leads one to wonder if anything else tragic will happen on this day in the future.

Book of Mormon - Changes

Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry (CARM) tells us that quite a few things have been changed in this book...
Some of the Many Changes in the Book of Mormon

Joseph Smith said "that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book," (History of the Church, vol. 4, p. 461). Allegedly it was translated by the power of God. Nevertheless, it has some 4,000 changes in it. Some are mere spelling corrections, but others are significant changes. Why is this so if the book of Mormon was translated accurately by the hand of God? Why would the Mormon Church continue to change the work even after Joseph Smith's death?

Following is a very small sample of the changes in the Book of Mormon.

Check them out for yourself - HERE @ www.carm.org.

Anything BUT the Bible

"Dreams, images, icons, symbols, meditations, chantings, labyrinths – anything but God’s Word – have become fully operational in the modern Emergent movement. All serve as a means to an end. Mysticism and experientialism do not simply supplement Scripture, they replace it. “This mystical theology is a denial of the fallen nature of man,” notes Bob DeWaay in his new book The Emergent Church: Undefining Christianity, and mysticism “suggests that all humans can find God” by engaging in these extra-biblical activities (p. 125)."

The Office

Shelly held the book she had taken out of her purse and glanced around the office. A large overflowing bookcase towered in the corner, between walls that were lined with framed certificates. This confrontation thing was not easy for her to do, and she was more than relieved when the youth pastor of the large evangelical church assured her that he totally agreed with her. She was just a mom of teenagers, so when he concurred that Rob Bell had indeed wandered away from orthodoxy, Shelly breathed a sigh of relief. However, the peaceful feeling quickly left her when the youth pastor mentioned that he still thought the Nooma DVD's in question were "great conversation starters," and he "wouldn't hesitate to put another one on." Even after she revealed to him that Rob Bell is a fan of Ken Wilber (New Age/Buddhist mystic) by showing him a page in her copy of Velvet Elvis that she had brought with her! Wasn't it shocking for him to see that Bell had recommended spending three entire months reading Wilber's A Brief History of Everything?

Apparently not, but she was assured she needn't worry about false teaching in the light of the fact that their leadership loved God's Word and their youth group was not going emergent. Never. They valued the Bible, the youth pastor insisted, but Shelly noticed it was not touched or read once during their conversation, although one lay nicely open on the tidy desk. Several times during their discussion the youth pastor got up up and reached for other books that he highly recommended she read. Later, she couldn't remember all the unfamiliar titles, but she did recognize one new book by Chuck Colson (1). Another supposedly excellent book was called unChristian. Had she heard of it before? No, she hadn't. In fact, Shelly didn't discover until months later that it wasn't really the best book at all when she accidentally stumbled across a book review, and found out that its co-author, Gabe Lyons, was the founder of the Fermi Project (an emerging social gospel ‘experiment’ in church shifting to find the good in our culture).

When the subject finally changed from Bell and books to her concerns about the experiential worship night that was to take place that week, Shelly was assured that it was not going to be a Roman Catholic thing at all - in fact, it was nothing at all like the title suggested. Odd. Why then, thought the teen's mom, was it even called a Tenebrae service in the first place? It was nothing for her to worry about though, as the person in charge of the evening loved Jesus, and besides, "even the Calvinists were doing these things now." As if that made it okay.

Concerning the prayer labyrinths that the youth group had been participating in the last few years, she learned that some other parents had initially protested, but when they changed the name to prayer stations, all had been well - once again, no cause for alarm here. It was just a nice way for teens to experience God. Although the youth pastor spoke very respectfully to her, Shelly was beginning to feel foolish for asking all these questions - besides, walking through prayer stations was probably a better pastime than hanging out at bars or doing drugs. Perhaps she had over reacted and misjudged.

The youth pastor glanced up at the clock. He had to go to a meeting, and so Shelly was politely ushered out of the office after being thoroughly assured and reassured that all was well. Yet, as she walked through the church parking lot, she strangely had an uneasy sense in her spirit that all was not well. But then, who was she to say anything more? It wasn't her office wall that was lined with shiny plaques and things like Bible college degrees and diplomas. She felt unsure about what had just happened in the office that day. The young pastor had seemed sincere, but his answers didn't appear to match his decisions. Only time would tell, she thought. Still, Shelly knew that she had been obedient to God by coming here today and asking this young pastor questions that were on her heart. In the end, every shepherd was accountable to God anyways, not her. In the meantime, all she could to was watch and pray that even if this shepherd would not listen to her, he would heed the warnings of the Holy Spirit, and not lead his lambs down the ecumenical, emerging contemplative path where so many others were going.

Some Things about The Contemplative Prayer Movement

A new article at Spiritual Research Nework answers this question...

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Do Christian Leaders Understand The Contemplative Prayer Movement?
By Christopher Lawson

Do Christian leaders understand the dangers of the Contemplative Prayer - Contemplative Spirituality [Spiritual Formation] movement? It appears that countless numbers of them do not. Countless others do not seem to care and others are hostile to those who expose the dangers of this so-called, ancient-future spirituality.

Contemplative Spirituality can be clearly defined this way:
Contemplative Spirituality: A belief system that uses ancient mystical practices to induce altered states of consciousness (the silence) and is rooted in mysticism and the occult but often wrapped in Christian terminology. The premise of contemplative spirituality is pantheistic (God is all) and panentheistic (God is in all). [http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/]
The concern that has motivated the writing of this article stems from the fact that many Christian leaders are ignorantly engaging in and outright promoting this dangerous spiritual method. The core of this methodology, which can lead to extreme spiritual hazards, is meditative, contemplative - centering prayer. In light of this, vast volumes of contemplative promoting literature is being gobbled up by undiscerning Christians. This fact alone shouts forth with clarity that the missing jewel in the 21st Century Church is biblical discernment. The following examples and citations serve to show the incredible lack of discernment showing forth in the Church today....

Hmmm...
Rick Warren Embarks on Follow-Up to 'Purpose Driven Life'

Megachurch Pastor Rick Warren is working on his next book – the follow-up to the bestselling Purpose Driven Life, which launched the Southern California preacher into national prominence. “I’m in book writing mode right now,” Warren reported in a broadcast to his church members Thursday. “I’ve gone back into hibernation to write the follow up to Purpose Driven Life now, eight years later. ABOUT THOSE BOOKS

As you sit on your beach chair this summer with a book, whether it's light and fluffy or something deeper you prefer, hopefully you have chosen your summer reading material well - but if you are still not sure, here are some things to consider...

ABOUT THOSE BOOKS

I have read lots of books that I thought were good at the time, but looking back, they have faded from my memory. After many years I’ve learned that there are lots of Christian books out there. Books by people that I now see were incomplete at best and incorrect at worst. A book might help us in the short term, but in the long run the best way to learn how to have a deep relationship with God is through His Word, which has stood the test of time. You won't necessarily find that in a book (unless it’s God’s book – the Bible).

For example, there are lots of books about what our purpose is, but there is only one way to live a life that fulfills our purpose for being on earth, and that is to worship and love God, and live for Him. Today, so many people are trying to find THEIR purpose on earth, and find THEIR passion or gift. While God has good plans for us, the thing is - we must pursue HIM with passion, not OUR purposes or OUR gifts and OUR passions, as some books are saying.

Some popular books claim that you will be changed after reading them in a certain number of days, or after a certain number of steps. That is more than a bit presumptuous. God works on his time schedule, not ours. He can change a life in a day or a week, but most often it takes a year, or years, and sometimes a lifetime.

Books will blow away like pages in the wind, but God’s word will last forever. So many of today’s books have an infrequent mention of the important things emphasized in the Bible, like the holiness of God, sin, the cross, our human flesh and old nature, God’s commands, His sovereignty, and even absolute truth. In their place, other concepts are substituted that won’t interfere with a ‘good self image.’ If there is more focus on things that leave you with a warm, fuzzy, feel-good message, emphasizing YOU, or what God can do for YOU, then that book won’t help you in the long run.

By the way, regarding the title of one popular book about finding your purpose, well, it’s been said that cattle are driven and sheep are led. Jesus referred to us as His sheep, and sheep are led by the Shepherd.

Bottom line
–YOU DON’T NEED A BOOK TO FIND YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE –
FIND IT IN CHRIST

Solar Eclipse This Week

A very interesting thing will happen this week...
The moon will hide the face of the sun again this month (Wednesday, July 22, 2009) in the longest solar eclipse in this 21st century. "It will be a monster, with a totality lasting more than 6.6 minutes at maximum," say Fred Espenak and Jay Anderson, writers for Sky & Telescope magazine.

You may recall that when we interviewed Mark Biltz for our May 2008 issue of Prophecy in the News magazine, we noted that he had discovered three solar eclipses that would occur on each of three annual calendar dates that introduce the Jewish month of Av for the years 2008, 2009, and 2010. The first eclipse occurred on August 1, 2008. The second solar eclipse is coming up this month — on July 22, 2009, and the third will happen on July 11, 2010...

What I'm Reading this Month

I'm on chapter 8 of A Wonderful Deception. As suspected, this brand new book is very good, so I am actually reading it slowly, not skimming it. Warren Smith is a very thorough researcher. This book is an eye opener for anyone who is wondering what is not quite right about some of those new books and things that have been influencing their church leadership. It's kind of an extension of another book of his I read a few years ago (called Deceived on Purpose) when I first became aware of all these things.

This one's another keeper.

Book of Daniel

I was looking at some teaching things the other day, and found a very nice chart here:

If you love the Lord and are awaiting his return, this should make you very excited. If you don't have a clue about what I am talking about, then consider studying the book of Daniel.

New Things like Yoga and Tai Chi instead of Church

This kind of goes with the last post, in regards to the spirituality that people fill their vacuum with when they turn from God. Whether it's paganism or mysticism, it's all a replacement for the truth. It starts like this...
IN THE beginning there was the Church. And people liked to dress up in their best clothes and go there on Sundays and they praised the Lord and it was good. But it came to pass that people grew tired of the Church and they stopped going, and began to be uplifted by new things such as yoga and t’ai chi instead. And, lo, a spiritual revolution was born....

Indoctrination into Paganism through Things like Teletubbies and Recycling

Did you ever think that nice things like cartoons and recycling could lead to paganism?
"...just watch Teletubbies. The indoctrination into things like recycling starts at an early age," says Catherine Hosen, a druid from Kent who watches a lot of CBeebies with her children. "If you start off trying to be environmentally aware, it is not much of a step to seeing all of nature as sacred, and from there to becoming a pagan."

If you click on the above link and read the entire article, you will discover other things that have helped to bring pagan ideas mainstream, like Harry Potter, and children's shows such as Raven and Merlin, as well as many other Saturday children's television shows.

Bishop says Prayer of Repentance is a Heretical Thing

Wow. What a thing to say...
Episcopal Bishop calls individual salvation 'heresy,' 'idolatry'

ANAHEIM, CA - Episcopal Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori says it's "heresy" to believe that an individual can be saved through a sinner's prayer of repentance.

In her opening address to the church's General Conference in California, Jefferts Schori called that "the great Western heresy: that we can be saved as individuals, that any of us alone can be in right relationship with God."

The presiding bishop said that view is "caricatured in some quarters by insisting that salvation depends on reciting a specific verbal formula about Jesus."

According to Schori, it is heresy to believe that an individual's prayer can achieve a saving relationship with God. "That individualist focus is a form of idolatry, for it puts me and my words in the place that only God can occupy."

Things are being found to prove the Bible is true.

Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
1 Corinthians 10:11

Contrary to what some people are saying, things are being dug up which prove the Bible to be true. In fact, what was meant for evil has turned into a very good thing for Israel. The Waqf may insist that Jews have no history and therefore no right to the city of Jerusalem or the Temple Mount, but we can now see that what God used for judgment upon disobedient Israel, has now come to surface as His perfect verdict of judgment on the unbelieving who say the Bible account is a myth.

Here's a thing I read in the final end note of a fascinating article at aish.com. This sums up what has been discovered and why:

Of course, Satan does not want these things to be revealed, as he is a liar and has been trying for a very long time to discredit the Scriptures and usurp the throne and be like God (Isaiah 14:12-15). The last thing he wants is for people to believe that the Messiah is going to return to Jerusalem, as the Bible tells us. This is why he has been very busy working on a takeover plot by scheming up a very sneaky replacement plan.

Anyways, as I read the Aish article, it occurred to me that there is definitely a parallel here. As we go through hardships and trials in our Christian walk we may experience things that seem dreadful to us at the time. These are the refining fires that God, in his perfect judgment, is executing. We must trust that His perfect plan will be revealed at the time of His choosing, for His name's sake. In the end, the only thing that matters on this earth is that when the King returns, we will be found in Him.

~But who may abide the day of his coming?
and who shall stand when he appeareth?
for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap~
Malachi 3:2

Is there such a thing as a 'generational sin curse'?

Ever heard of a teaching that says your behavior and problems are caused by what happened to you when you were a child? And that you have to look into your childhhood memories (including your mother's feelings during pregnancy and your birth canal experience), and your ancestry to see what sin has been cursing you, and leading you into sin?

If so, check this out...

New Book about Contemplative Spirituality

Here's a book review of a new novel about contemplative spirituality that is being called "fiction with a message."
Book Review on Castles in the Sand
by C. Pack
(Used with permission)

"Spiritual Formation is Dangerous.... And Here's Why"

As a former New Ager, I have become increasingly alarmed at the New Age/New Spirituality practices and beliefs that I have seen flowing into the church. I was saved in a conservative, evangelical church that boldly proclaimed the gospel: Jesus is THE Way, THE Truth and THE Life, and no-one comes to the Father but by Him. Yet, within 2 years time, this same precious church began to preach sermons on past mystics (St. John of the Cross), began offering yoga classes, and began to adopt practices that eerily reminded me of my New Age days... all of which are an assault on the true gospel...

Some Things Tony Jones said about Being Born Again

I just listened to what Tony Jones said about a very important thing. Salvation. Does this sound like he has a clear understanding of what it means to be born again?

Tony Jones Asked If He's Born Again (3 minutes)
www.youtube.com

I think it's terribly sad that Tony Jones says he wakes up every day wondering if his life is based on a crock, or a hoax, and doesn't know if he is born again, but that certainly does explain his spiritual search (see here). The truth of the matter is that when we are born again, it is of the spirit (who bears witness in our spirit that we are born again) AND through the word of God (that says we have been reconciled to God through His Son, by the blood of Christ). Therefore, we CAN know we are saved!

Earliest Bible Pages now on the Internet

Interesting thing of the day...
Historic Bible pages put online

About 800 pages of the earliest surviving Christian Bible have been recovered and put on the internet.

Visitors to the website www.codexsinaiticus.org can now see images of more than half the 1,600-year-old Codex Sinaiticus manuscript.

Fragments of the 4th Century document - written in Greek on parchment leaves - have been worked on by institutions in the UK, Germany, Egypt and Russia.

Experts say it is "a window into the development of early Christianity".

A Letter to RW on Your Statements on Islam

[By the way, there are reports of supernatural occurrences in “closed countries” where preaching the Gospel is forbidden. Muslims are experiencing dreams and visions of Jesus Christ, and then following Him as their Lord and Saviour. The way things are going (in the light of recent events), perhaps we need to pray that these dreams and visions will occur in the US as well.]

What has Happened to our Nation?

Here is a very interesting MUST SEE thing that you can listen to FREE on the internet:
“State of the Nation – 2009” address

It is important to realize that although America has more Christian resources and Bible colleges than ever in its history, the nation is on a spiritual downward spiral. What has happened? Why is the church not reaching the culture today as it has in the past?
Watch it HERE @ www.answersingenesis.org (Ken Ham).

This is an excellent, clear, current, and sobering presentation with some very interesting statistics that may surprise you! For example, is Sunday School detrimental to your children's health? Check it out. (Note: If you make popcorn, you may not feel like eating it. By the way, this would be a great DVD to show to Sunday School teachers and leaders.)

A Book called Wholly Jesus

I was recently given a book called Wholly Jesus, written by someone named Mark Foreman. As I opened it up and browsed through its pages, alarm bells immediately began to ring. First of all, I noticed that in this book he quotes contemplative authors, like Dallas Willard and Morton Kelsey, the Episcopalian priest who said "You can find most of the New Age practices in the depth of Christianity.... I believe that the Holy One lives in every soul”(1). I also noticed that the author favorably quotes the 16th century Spanish mystic St. Teresa of Avila (for more about her, see Castles in the Sand). As I read more, I was quite surprised to see that, just like Sue Monk Kidd (2), Mr. Foreman thinks it’s okay to use the Hindu greeting Namaste (“I honor the god in you”) to others in recognition that they are made in the image of God.

But I suppose it's no wonder Mark Foreman is leaning towards contemplatives and mystics, because I also discovered he is an associate professor of spiritual formation at Bethel Seminary in San Diego. This seminary teaches practicing the presence of God, centering prayer, body prayer, and Lectio Divina.

Another thing that caught my eye as I skimmed through Wholly Jesus rang another warning bell. The introduction is written by Gabe Lyons, founder of the emerging Fermi Project. This is basically an ‘experiment’ in shifting the consciousness of the church by finding the good in our culture in order to reshape it through global awareness and environmentally sustainable practices.

Mr. Foreman's sons may be in the popular Christian band, Switchfoot, as noted on the front cover (they wrote the forewords), and this book may have lots of things written in it that sound very good, but so far, too many little warning bells indicate that this book probably belongs on my research shelf beside Foster and Nouwen, until further notice.

The Lucrative Business of Prophecy

I heard an interesting thing a few weeks ago. Someone from my town had received a word from the Lord at a convention in Whistler, B.C., featuring Jedediah Tham and Charlie Robinson. According to this person, Mr. Jedediah Tham is world renowned for counsel he provides to senior financial executives (for which he charges a small fee of $100,000 per hour in advance). Anyways, this person who went to the convention now had a testimony to share about the word he got 'from the Lord' at the conference. The word concerned greater works (global restoration) that God would give us, new prophetic gifts from the Holy Spirit, uncommon answers and understanding beyond our present knowledge. To top it off, this word from the Lord also included Canada, which has a 'destiny in Kingdom business'. Finally, the word was that ‘our words create our climate.’

Sorry to say, but in my humble opinion, this sounds like a load of positive thinking, extreme prophetic, kingdom now theology nonsense!

And here is why…

There was indeed a conference recently in Whistler B.C. It was called “Ahead of the Nations,” and the speakers were Jedidiah Tham, Charlie Robinson, Stacey Campbell and Marc Brisebois. (Who can forget Stacey Campbell and her infamous head shaking ecstatic prophecies?) But there's more. This week, these guys are heading to Toronto (to TACF - home of The Toronto Blessing) with Patricia King for something called the Canadian Oil Conference. (See more conference promos here.)

This is a bit different than the 'greater glory' and 'catch the fire' thing of last year. It appears that the modern day prophets are now using current issues that will grab people’s attention (the economy), and are focusing on the prophetic/financial realm. In addition to these financial conferences, they also sell the DVD's, so that those who are in the midst of impending financial crisis and are worried about their emptying wallets will need to pay only 32 bucks to walk in abundance during the recession! Like this one...
Prophetic Wisdom for End Time Finances

Charlie Robinson and Dr. Jedidiah Tham join Craig Buroker for an in depth look at what God is saying to His church in the midst of impending financial crisis. Dr. Tham carries a global financial anointing that speaks a clear prophetic word enabling people to see why the economic crisis may worsen and how they can prepare themselves to align with God and prosper in it. The depth of anointing and spiritual wisdom on these teachings will change your thinking about finances and allow you to walk in abundance as God prepares His church for the great end time transfer of wealth. -[Source]
After the Toronto thing, Dr. Jedidiah is going to be speaking in Taiwan this August about overcoming global financial calamity through divine wisdom (see here). Also speaking at this same conference will be fellow birds of a feather Jeff Jansen (see his contemplative soaking CD here and his out of body experience CD here) and Matt Sorger (of The New Breed).

While one cannot always judge a bird by the flock he is flying with, in this case, it's pretty obvious that these teachers are all in the same modern day prophetic/business category. Therefore, it is my humble opinion that these might be the kind of men that we are warned about in the Bible (Acts 20:29).

If these things concern you, here are some related items for further research (regarding Charlie Robinson) that might stir you to warn those who are following so called anointed prophets of prosperity and their business partners.

Another thing that is a little on the outlandish side:
JUDGMENT AND REVIVAL

Charlie Robinson, a recognized seer prophet from Abbotsford, began by describing the message about the glory that God birthed in his heart years ago. The Lord had promised that he would see the goodness (glory) of the Lord in the land of the living (Ps. 27:13). He also described prophetic words God had given him many years before about revival in Canada and in Abbotsford, before describing manifestations of that revival in the city and through Fresh Fire.

Charlie spoke about the power that is released when God puts a roar like a lion in our spirits and we release it. Years before the Lord called him to roar over each province in Canada in order to disarm the religious spirits in the nation. He said that recently, when he was in Indonesia, God prompted him to roar like a lion—six days later there was an earthquake and the tsunami hit. Charlie noted that this event was actually just a natural manifestation of God's judgment of a spiritual principality—it wasn't a judgment on people.

Note: In regards to Freshfire Ministries, it is now called Transform International. Mr. Bentley has flown south and unabashedly started a new USA Freshfire Ministry (www.freshfireusa.com) after unexpectedly divorcing his wife and marrying his nanny.

Look who wants to be partners...
WASHINGTON, DC – Defying some of his fellow conservative Christian critics, one of the most prominent religious leaders in the country told several thousand American Muslims on Saturday that "the two largest faiths on the planet" must work together to combat stereotypes and solve global problems.

"Some problems are so big you have to team tackle them," evangelical megachurch pastor Rick Warren addressed the annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA).

Warren said Muslims and Christians should be partners in working to end what he calls "the five global giants" of war, poverty, corruption, disease, and illiteracy.

The Great Emergence Event will Tickle Ears

~For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires~
2 Timothy 4:3 (NASB)

The book is called Great Emergence, The: How Christianity Is Changing and Why by Phyllis Tickle. The big event (thegreatemergence.com/TheEvent) is called The Great Emergence, a one day conference that will take place in Winnipeg on October 31 (Halloween). It's being promoted as...

A BOOK...

AN EVENT...

A PHENOMENON...

The event consists of four main sessions with author/speaker Phyllis Tickle. In between these sessions, participants will also do the daily office (three daily times of scheduled prayer) based on a bestselling book called The Divine Hours (also by Phyllis Tickle).

Phyllis Tickle's bio says she is "the founding editor of the religion department at Publishers Weekly, is one of the most highly respected authorities and popular speakers on religion in America today. She is the author of more than two dozen books on the subject, including the recently published The Words of Jesus: A Gospel of the Sayings of Our Lord and The Divine Hours, a series of manuals for observing fixed-hour prayer. A lector and lay eucharistic minister in the Episcopal Church, Tickle is a senior fellow of the Cathedral College of Washington National Cathedral. For more information, go to www.phyllistickle.com."

What is NOT mentioned in her bio is that Phyllis Tickle is also on the editorial board of Explore Faith (along with heretic Marcus Borg), which offers spiritual guidance for anyone seeking the path to God . See here:
www.explorefaith.org/about_us/editorial_board/index.php

Among those whom Explore Faith recommends as valued spiritual teachers are Guru Ram Dass, Zen Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh, Sufi Muslim Rumi, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa of Avila and Thomas Merton.
See here:
www.explorefaith.org/faces_of_faith/saints_prophets_spiritual_guides/index.php

As you can see, the spirituality promoted by Phyllis Tickle is not even close to being true to the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is why the emerging church leaders who have strayed from the truth in God's Word love her books and things. Even so, many denominations that you would never suspect to be involved with this kind of interfaith spirituality are sponsoring The Great Emergence event with Phyllis Tickle. See event sponsors here (reader beware: you may be shocked):

WWDD?

A new article by Bob Unruh tells us that the Harry Potter thing is now becoming influential on its film and fiction fans towards 'social change.' Check it out:

Got questions about life, death, politics or religion? How about one on the topic of "gay" marriage?

It's time for WWDD.

That's not a typo on the familiar WWJD -- "What Would Jesus Do?" -- a theme among Christians. It stands for "What Would Dumbledore Do?" a new move to answer such questions and spark "social change" through the "teachings" available in the Harry Potter witchcraft books and movies.

Beth Moore and the 'Be Still DVD' Thing (Updated)

What’s up with the Beth Moore thing? I’ve been asked by a few people what I think of Beth Moore’s books and things. Well here’s what I think - I don’t know what I think as I’ve never read her books, and have listened to her teach only a few times.

But here’s what I do know…she was on the very contemplative Be Still DVD a few years ago, which I have watched. Apparently she was okay with this connection and never backed down from endorsing it (see Beth Moore Gives Thumbs Up to Be Still DVD). Her name also appears on the Be Still Participant's Guide. The Be Still DVD was deceptive, as there were some Bible teachers interviewed on the DVD who are not contemplative. This sent a mixed message because it made the practice of contemplative prayer and mysticism appear accepted and mainstream.

For more on whether or not she approves of contemplative prayer, see here:

Beth Moore's Illicit Tent of Meeting
By Bob DeWaay
www.worldviewtimes.com

Aside from that, I have heard others say that the main issue they have about Beth Moore's teaching is that, although she speaks to mostly women, she also teaches men in her own church. It's also been mentioned that she frequently interprets scripture by her own allegories, and spiritualizes her personal experiences.

But they also say she is a sweet woman who loves the Lord. For those who love Beth Moore's teaching (and it's mostly women) - I am not trying to put her down. I am simply answering a question (and not very well at that). I guess the main thing here is that people are not to idolize any Bible teacher, whether male or female, but to stick to the whole counsel of God. It's important to surround ourselves with lots of good Bible teachers, but we also need to examine everything we hear with the Scriptures. Until I know more, that's all I can say. You know, some people have tried to "warn" me that Kay Arthur is a false teacher(1), because she has taught men or something like that. Yet it was through Kay Arthur's teaching, Precept Upon Precept, that I was changed by the Word of God. I hope I can have a balanced view about these things, and be over flowing with the grace I have been given.

So there's my answer, which is mostly based on what others have said. If anyone has any comments to add regarding this subject, please feel free to do so.

If anyone needs to read some helpful reviews of Beth Moore, see here. There is also an interesting thread from both sides of the issue on this forum (not that I am promoting the beliefs on that forum...just thought it was an interesting conversation).

From time to time, somebody will email me with a question about the Apocrypha, or the 'extra' books found in certain versions of the Bible. The Douay version (approved by the Vatican) includes the Apocrypha. So do some King James Versions, although the Apocryphal books are set apart.

First, what is the 'Apocrypha'? The word itself is derived from ecclesiastical Latin apocrypha scripta meaning 'hidden writings' which was itself derived from the Greek apokruphos meaning 'to hide away'.

The Apocryphical books of the Bible fall into two categories...

Letters from Heaven

Here's a new article...
There are seven letters in Revelation 2 and 3 which the Head of the Christian Church, Jesus Christ Himself, directed to the entire church of all centuries, through the mediation of His servant, John. The letters are undated and therefore timeless writings to all followers of Christ – the faithful and the wayward ones. The letters contain precious promises and loving encouragement to those who persevere in the right way, but also clear reprimands and serious warnings to all who started to err and subsequently departed from the truth. Many of the latter have completely lost their way....

Has This Thing Been Scaring Your Kids?

School's out for the summer, but this thing has apparently been shown in schools everywhere...
There's a video currently making the rounds among schools (and on the Internet) which purports to explain to children how America's consumption of "stuff" is destroying the planet.
