Discerning Things with Love

The latest post at Herescope addresses a very good question that is worth pondering for all those who feel impelled to warn others about false teaching in the church...
"can speaking of truth offend some persons to the degree that it will create in them an emotional impression that those who speak the truth do not love them?

Understanding a few things about Evil on the Eve of an Evil Evening

It's a funny thing how the oh so civilized people of our nation do not want to acknowledge God or the angels He sent to announce Christ's birth, but will be just fine with decorating, dressing like, and parading around in costumes that look like fallen angels (demons, spirits) or other such demonically inspired evil looking things for Satan's high holy day. In fact, this ancient Celtic day of the dead has become so popular that some are calling Halloween the "new Christmas." You can't even walk into a store this time of year without your eyes being asssaulted with evil looking things to wear and decorate your house with. And they wonder why the world has gone wonky. But...
"Unless we have a biblical view of God, mankind, and the spirit world, we will not have the perspective to understand the evil that plagues our world."
That's from a very relevant thing to read here...

Man Centered approach to the Bible

The following is a chunk I took out of an EXCELLENT teaching by John MacArthur. It's a rather brilliant but obvious solution to what today's pastors are doing by bringing man centered approaches to the Bible into their churches - such as things like the 12 Step program (i.e. Celebrate Recovery, etc.) instead of preaching the Word of God. (Basically he's laid out a 12 step recovery plan for pastors who are addicted to church programs in this article.) This excerpt really shows the effect that church marketing has had on Christians and how their love for the Word has grown cold...
Talking recently to people at Thomas Nelson Publishing, they were telling me that Bible sales are going down. At the same time that supposedly 85 percent of Americans say they are evangelical Christians, Bible sales are diminishing. And according to exit polls, 50 percent of the people who go to a Christian bookstore to buy a Bible, leave without one. They aren't really sure just how important it is. For may of them, the only Bible they ever see is a verse, usually taken out of context, and slapped on a PowerPoint screen. Many of them sit in an auditorium where it's too dark to read a Bible if they had one. And if they had one, they would wonder why. The Bible is, to many people who call themselves Christians, a book like a lot of other books, with some good suggestions about how to live your life that can be manipulated and twisted a dozen different ways to make them meaningful to you.

And so the publishers are saying, if we're gonna sell Bibles, we're gonna have to appeal to felt need rather than the revelation of God. We can't any longer talk about this is God's revealed truth. We can't any longer talk about this is inspired by God. This is the word from heaven. We can't do that. We have to call the Bible, not the Word of God, but a message that will fix you. We have to sell Bibles and they presented a full video presentation. Are you lonely? Are you unfulfilled? Are you happy? Here's a book that can change all that. A man-centered approach to selling Bibles. And, in fact, I was warned that a study Bible is an anachronism because people today don't even connect the two words "study" and "Bible".

It all started when the Bible became the forbidden book...

It all started in the Dark Ages when the Bible became the forbidden book...and now look what they are going back to...

The Error of Spiritual Formation
By Roger Oakland

When I first began writing in the field in the late 70s and early 80s the term "Spiritual Formation" was hardly known, except for highly specialized references in relation to the Catholic orders. Today it is a rare person who has not heard the term. Seminary courses inSpiritual Formation proliferate like baby rabbits. Huge numbers are seeking to become certified as Spiritual Directors to answer the cry of multiplied thousands for spiritual direction. - Richard Foster 1

A move away from the truth of God's Word to a mystical form of Christianity has infiltrated, to some degree, nearly all evangelical denominations. Few Bible teachers saw this avalanche coming. Now that it is underway, most do not realize it has even happened.

The best way to understand this process is to recall what happened during the Dark Ages when the Bible became the forbidden book. Until the reformers translated the Bible into the language of the common people, the great masses were in darkness. When the light of God's Word became available, the Gospel was once again understood.

I believe history is repeating itself. As the Word of God becomes less and less important, the rise in mystical experiences escalates, and these experiences are presented to convince the unsuspecting that Christianity is about feeling, touching, smelling, and seeing God. The postmodern mindset is the perfect environment for fosteringspiritual formation. This term suggests there are various ways and means to get closer to God and to emulate Him. Thus the idea that if you do certain practices, you can be more like Jesus. Proponents of spiritual formation erroneously teach that anyone can practice these mystical rituals and find God within. Having a relationship with Jesus Christ is not a prerequisite. In a DVD called Be Still, which promotes contemplative prayer, Richard Foster says that contemplative prayer is for anyone and that by practicing it, one becomes "a portable sanctuary" for "the presence of God." 2

Seems they are serious about this extraterrestrial thing...

They are absolutely serious about this thing…
The impending disclosure announcement follows upon the secret implementation of a year long openness policy on UFOs and extraterrestrial life. Over the period February 12-14, 2008, the United Nations held closed doors discussions where approximately 30 nations secretly agreed on a new openness policy on UFOs and extraterrestrial life in 2009. The openness policy was implemented but never publicly announced due to threats against UN diplomats not to disclose details of the secret agreement. h The secret UN agreement was based on two conditions. First, UFOs would continue to appear around the world; and second, the openness policy would not lead to social unrest in liberal democracies. Both conditions have been satisfied making it possible for the next stage to begin – official disclosure of extraterrestrial life.
There is more about it here:

A Dangerous Thing to Cross Over

The practice of contemplative prayer and the place it takes you could be dangerous for your soul. Even those who teach it say so.
"...Foster himself says this is a dangerous prayer method that can invoke demonic activity and requires special protection. From Foster's book, Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home, Foster says: "I also want to give a word of precaution. In the silent contemplation of God we are entering deeply into the spiritual realm, and there is such a thing as a supernatural guidance that is not divine guidance. While the Bible does not give us a lot of information on the nature of the spiritual world [not true], we do know … there are various orders of spiritual beings, and some of them are definitely not in cooperation with God and his way! … But for now I want to encourage you to learn and practice prayers of protection.… 'All dark and evil spirits must now leave.'"5

-Ray Yungen
Richard Foster and the Be Still DVD
Foster is not the only contemplative to admit the danger. Other spiritual directors are saying the same thing. For example, we are warned HERE that this bridge certainly does look like a dangerous thing to cross!

How ironic of those involved in this very thing to warn us. How odd to suggest danger on one hand while promoting dangerous spirituality at the same time, such as the spiritual director at the above Soul Stream blog promoting the spirituality of the three gurus of contemplative eastern spirituality, here:

3 Videos @ Soul Stream Ripples
soulstreamripples.wordpress.com

These three gurus, promoted by so many trained spiritual directors today as spiritual teachers to help you care for your soul, are Richard Rohr, Thomas Merton and Thomas Keating.

Meanwhile, who does the Bible say is our spiritual director?

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. John 16:13

Wake up all you Christians who are using these resources! You may be sleep walking behind your spiritual director right into the danger zone. Follow Jesus! He will never lead you astray!

Drops Like Stars - Book Review

Rob Bell has written a new book. Check out this eye opening review...
Book Review: Rob Bell's Drops Like Stars
Mike Stanwood

What has red gilded pages, a hard cover, and costs more than the average person might pay for a book that can be read in one sitting? From a distance, Rob Bell's gigantic new book Drops like Stars is reminiscent of the Twilight Series look, with red flower and broken petals falling and shattering to pieces against a black backdrop. It looks like something you might find on a table in the corner of your favorite trendy coffee shop. ...
Read the rest here @ lighthousetrailsresearch.com (it's quite lengthy but important to read). This review is quite the opposite of raving ones that Rob Bell's fans are giving it. Like this one in Relevant Magazine, which has already given it an trendy nickname (Drops):
Drops is an exciting new direction for the prolific pastor, both for the maturity of its theological reflection, and for its fascinating—at times stunning—design and visual elements, which play freely in the expansive book’s “coffee table” dimensions.
http://www.relevantmagazine.com/culture/books/reviews/18143-drops-like-stars
I recently read an interview (pro) where Rob Bell was asked how he got the idea for this unusual book.
"The main idea for the book was birthed several years ago and right away I knew there would be a visual element, because some things have to be seen, trying to describe them just doesn't work. And then I got it in my head that it had to be big and heavy-like you'd get it in your hands and say "whoa, this is a book." and once you have a vision for something you hold on to it with all your might until it actually exists...and then you celebrate."
Not only is it big and heavy, so is the price. It's on sale right now at our local Christian book store for $39.99. Like, you'd get it in your hands and say, "whoa, this book costs more than it does to sponsor a precious child with Gospel for Asia for one month." And then you put it back on the shelf, and sadly wonder who will buy it.

Believe it or Not, this is what Pagitt says is Worth Believing - Book Review

Doug Pagitt's New Book - A Christianity Worth Believing - NOT Worth Believing
by Ezra McGill

In his book, A Christianity Worth Believing, emergent leader Doug Pagitt presents a theology that is worth exposing, because it is neither biblical nor Christian. This is the unfortunate power of media-savvy emergent leaders--errant theology is couched in Christian terms, and the undiscerning are drawn in.

Rant of the Day - a thing I noticed in a daily devotional

It's one thing to quote a paraphrase of the Bible, but quite another to teach from it, wouldn't you say? Well, here's the surprise of the week, sort of. Not really. Someone kindly sent me yesterday's "Today's Turning Point" devotional from David Jeremiah, and I was quited shocked (in a way, sort of, but not really - more like disappointed) to see that in this devotional he is actually teaching from The Message...
Tuesday, October 20
Keep Your Focus on Jesus

So my dear Christian friends, companions in following this call to the heights, take a good hard look at Jesus. He's the centerpiece of everything we believe.
Hebrews 3:1 (The Message)

Recommended Reading
2 Corinthians 4:16-18

"Take a good hard look." In other words, focus. In optics, focus is the point toward which light rays converge. In geometry, it's a special point used in describing conic sections. When we concentrate our attention, we are focusing. When we do it with others in an organized way, we're in a focus group. The Navy has a missile named Focus, and Ford has a car by the same name. In sports, lack of focus is often the reason given for defeat; and players in a slump try to regain their focus. When we take a blurred picture, it's because we didn't focus the camera on the right object.

In life, we find that Christ becomes blurred in our vision when we focus on our problems. But when we put Him in the center of the picture, our trials are less of a focal point and more of a background blur. The apostle Paul said, "We do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen, for what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:15, HCSB).

Therefore, holy brothers, keep your focus on Jesus.
First of all, this is how Hebrews 3:1 goes in a real Bible (I used KJV but most Bible translations are similar):
1Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
Funny how Eugene Peterson has taken 'Christ' out of that verse. It's so typical. I remember hearing David Hocking say more than once that there are 100's of guys in Mexico named Jesus, but "Christ" tells us which Jesus. Christ, or "Christos," the anointed one, the Messiah, the Son of God.

Oh, on that note, here's another thing...
The Message "Bible" Omits "Lord Jesus"

The King James Bible refers to Jesus as "Lord Jesus" about 115 times. The New King James Bible uses this term about the same amount of times and the New American Standard about 100 times. How many times does Eugene Peterson's The Message use the phrase "Lord Jesus"? None! Not once. Never!

What The Message does refer to Jesus 77 times is the title "Master Jesus." This is a New Age term.

Too bad Pastor Jeremiah, one of the better Bible teachers on the Christian radio station we tune in to, is using The Message now too. (First it was Chuck Swindoll.) I just don't understand why they do this. Other than that, the Turning Point devotional is okay, but here's the thing. Can you see what he is doing? He starts of by interpreting Eugene Peterson's words:
"Take a good hard look." In other words, focus.
Instead of interpreting what the Bible says, and maybe going into the background, the Greek, etc., Pastor Jeremiah is elaborating on Eugene Peterson's paraphrased phrase! So I went and looked it up for him, at blueletterbible.org, and the Greek word used in this particular verse is actually katanoeō ("consider" in English) which actually means:
  1. to perceive, remark, observe, understand
  2. to consider attentively, fix one's eyes or mind upon
Okay, not a huge deal, but it does add to the depth, so why not do that? The point is, why would a pastor of the gospel, especially one of Jeremiah's stature, elaborate on a verse from what some have called a milquetoast paraphrase written by a contemplative mystic for his devotional? Isn't this just setting a precedent to continue on this pathway? I am NOT saying that he is a false teacher now, but it appears that he seems to have lost his focus lately. Yesterday's devotional was all about focus, and focusing on Jesus, so then why was he is focusing on The Message? I suppose one might also ask why he has recently quoted, endorsed, and partnered with various New Age, Buddhist, and contemplative figures (see here).

~Heavy sigh~

What else is new...I suppose most people don't know, don't hear, don't care anyways. This is just the way things are going I guess. If people want to follow in that direction, it's their choice. I don't mean to make a mountain out of a molehill, or pick on David Jeremiah - he is only one of many pastors who are doing this - he is just a more noticable one. If nothing else, this is just another reminder for each one of us to stay on course. We are all responsible to examine everything we hear, and we are all as individuals accountable to Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd.

Perhaps this would be a timely devotional for today...

Rocky Mountain College - another school goes contemplative

It sounds like a great place to learn about the Bible and be grounded in The Rock. But wait a minute. Not so fast. What indication is there that Rocky Mountain college may not be the best place to send your student for a traditional, solid Bible college education?

Well, because of a certain link on their website to something called the Centre for Christian Spirituality.

Some of those on board at this centre for spirituality have some very contemplative backgrounds. For example, one of the leaders listed under “the community that serves together as the Centre for Christian Spirituality” is Doug Schroeder (senior pastor at Crossroads Community Church in Calgary, AB, Canada). He is also on the board of directors for the nearby King's Fold Retreat Centre and has recently completed the Soul Stream program for spiritual direction at King's Fold. He also facilitates an 18 month spiritual direction course with Soul Stream, credits for which may be applied toward a Master of Pastoral Ministry at Carey Theological College in Vancouver, B.C. Also, since Mr. Schroeder is on the board at King's Fold, his church is promoting several one day retreats there this fall.

This sounds all too familiar. To see my recent post on the very contemplative King’s Fold Retreat Center, and their facilites which include a Labyrinth, Stations of the Cross, fasting cabins, and Quiet Spaces, etc., click here.

Another leader listed at Centre for Christian Spirituality is Rob Peterson, spiritual director and mentor who serves with Soul Stream (www.soulstream.org). He offers his experiences and resources in the area of leadership soul care, which also has to do with contemplative spiritual formation. Soul Stream is another extremely contemplative ministry run by Jeff and Steve Imbach (Jeff Imbach is the founding president of the Henri Nouwen Society of Canada).

These are probably very nice people, to be sure. But is this kind of thing that you would expect a son or daughter or family member to learn at "Bible" school?

Not only is the Centre for Christian Spirituality a link on the Rocky Mountain Bible College website. This centre is also offering a one day event next year (at the college and at a nearby Alliance Church) with Eugene Peterson, author of the popular paraphrase referred to by many as the Bible called The Message:
A DAY WITH EUGENE PETERSON

On May 27, 2010, Eugene Peterson, translator of The Message will be joining us at the Centre for two events. The lecture sessions featuring Dr. Peterson, are being sponsored by the Centre for Christian Spirituality.

Pastor’s Retreat with Dr. Peterson – May 27
Rocky Mountain College chapel – 9:00-11:30 am
Cost: $30.00 per person.

This morning retreat with Dr. Peterson is open only to those who serve as pastors and pastoral staff, and for any who are involved in Christian ministry. Dr. Peterson’s address will be targeted toward frontline ministry personnel.

Evening Session with Dr. Peterson – May 27
Foothills Alliance Church – 7:00 – 8:30 pm
Cost: $30.00 per person.

The evening session is open to everyone, and the address by Dr. Peterson will focus upon the role of the Word of God in our spiritual formation and transformation.

This link between this centre for contemplative spirituality and Dr. Peterson comes as no surprise, as Eugene Peterson’s own books and things have revealed beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is a contemplative mystic. However, don't you think it's a surprise (and a shocker) to see how ministry leaders and students every where are being so heavily targeted and focused on by these contemplative organizations and teachers? Like, what on earth is going on here? As more church leaders, and future church leaders, are being taught ancient contemplative practices and a blend of spirituality that is not entirely biblical (and even extra-biblical), it kind of makes you wonder what many churches will look like a few years from now, doesn't it? This is only the beginning. If you belong to a solid Bible believing church, or support a solid Bible based Christian college, this is probably a good time to remember to pray for them daily.

Look who's Exercising with Ignatius

Who is this Ignatius guy and what’s with these things called 'exercises' so many are using and teaching in churches and Bible colleges these days? Let's see what some well known ministries have to say about this.

In the following explanation, Pastor Ken Silva says these were the exercises used by the “Spiritual Gestapo unit of Ignatius.” See here:

Who is Ignatius of Loyola?
apprising.org

Regarding Ignatius Loyola's Exercise of Examen, T.A. McMahon of The Berean Call writes this:
Ignatian Examen is an occult visualization technique taught by Ignatius Loyola, who founded the Jesuits in the 16th century. His exercise teaches one to visualize oneself in the presence of Jesus and then interact with Him during his earthly events, e.g., "at the Last Supper and the Garden of Gethsemane, at the foot of the cross, and laying Jesus' body in the tomb."6 This has one adding content to Scripture from his imagination and opens a person to demonic manipulation (2 Corinthians 11:4; Galatians 1:8).

-Evangelical Mysticism?(The Berean Call)
Then there’s this thing I read, written by Chris Pinto:
Jesuits

When the Bible began to be translated into the languages of the common man, it resulted in the Protestant Reformation. What few modern day Christians are aware of, however, is that Rome launched a Counter Reformation in 1540 with the establishment of the Society of Jesus (also known as the Jesuit Order). Their purpose was to destroy the work of the Reformers and bring the world back into the Dark Ages. It is our belief that the Counter Reformation continues to this day, and is the real secret behind the Ecumenical Movement, the World Council of Churches, the European Union, and the Emerging Church.

Several years ago, I met with Roger Oakland while we were still based in California. Roger had been teaching on the Emerging Church and its connections to Rome. When I first saw him, I asked: "Do you think this is the continuation of the Counter Reformation?" His immediate answer was, "Yes ..."

... which brings us to Rick Warren and Tony Blair.

-RICK WARREN, TONY BLAIR & THE VATICAN AGENDA
by Chris Pinto
Say what? Could this counter reformation still be going on? In the light of these eye opening explanations, isn't it strange who you find promoting and participating in the spiritual exercises of Ignatius of Loyola these days? I took a quick look around and found these, for starters...

The #5 Key Thing to Transformation

The key to freedom is in Jesus Christ and the enabling, transforming power of the Holy Spirit, right?

Uhhh...no, says RW, the #5 key thing to Jesus transforming us is in - community and small groups.
Number five—the fifth principle of how Jesus transforms us, transforms our lives—is (this is extremely important; most people don’t get this in America): Lasting change requires community.

You know that perpetual in your life, that habit that you can’t break, that you’d like to change, you’re never going to get well on your own, you’re never going to get freedom on your own, you’re never going to get release from it on your own, if you could you would but you can’t so you won’t because God wired us in such a way that we need each other in order to grow, in order to be transformed.

So the journey we take in all of these spiritual growth emphasis—these spiritual growth journeys, the experiences, the campaigns, whatever you want to call them—the key to them is not the preaching, the key to them is the small groups.

-Life's Healing Choices: Rick Warren's Imitation Sanctification
watcherslamp.blogspot.com

Compare:
5. RESTRUCTURE THE CHURCH: The early Social Gospel proponents had strong ties with Communism and Socialism and they emphasized restructuring Society into a collective model (see previous post). The New Social Gospel proponents also borrow from the communist cell model, revamping it into modern small groups. But the purposes remain the same. The following article is very illuminating on this topic.

“The Cellular Church: Letter From Saddleback: How Rick Warren built his ministry,” by Malcolm Gladwell, New Yorker, 9/12/05

(...)

“One solution to the problem is simply not to grow, and, historically, churches have sacrificed size for community. But there is another approach: to create a church out of a network of lots of little church cells—exclusive, tightly knit groups of six or seven who meet in one another's homes during the week to worship and pray. The small group as an instrument of community is initially how Communism spread, and in the postwar years Alcoholics Anonymous and its twelve-step progeny perfected the small-group technique. The small group did not have a designated leader who stood at the front of the room. Members sat in a circle. The focus was on discussion and interaction—not one person teaching and the others listening—and the remarkable thing about these groups was their power. An alcoholic could lose his job and his family, he could be hospitalized, he could be warned by half a dozen doctors—and go on drinking. But put him in a room of his peers once a week—make him share the burdens of others and have his burdens shared by others—and he could do something that once seemed impossible.

(Read more at above links if interested to learn how small group community is a sure way to breed volunteering, social action {social gospel?} and giving - i.e. productive P.E.A.C.E. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

Arthur Goes to Emerging Church

I LOVE this short little story...so well written...

Saloman’s Perch: Emergent Divergent
mywordlikefire.wordpress.com

It's fiction.

Or is it?

Recovery or Rebirth?

Do we need recovery or rebirth? Which one of these things will change our hearts from the inside out.
The lack of rebirth can in most cases be attributed to the fact that religious traditions are established in which people are only bodily and mentally touched – not spiritually. Outward, bodily rituals are ministered to members of a religious group, e.g. circumcision in the Old Testament and baptism in the New Testament. These are accompanied by teachings and rules which are only mentally memorised and then observed: these are commandments of men which later become traditions that are inherited from one generation to another. However, the essential aspect of spiritual awakening, or rebirth, is absent; consequently, it does not lead to true faith in people’s hearts.
That's a little piece from a new article at Bible Guidance here:

The Necessity of Rebirth
Prof. Johan Malan
www.bibleguidance.co.za

~ ~ ~

By the way, I thought it would be interesting to check the definitions for these two words. This is what I found at The Free Dictionary:
recovery:
1. the act or process of recovering, esp from sickness, a shock, or a setback; recuperation
2. restoration to a former or better condition
3. the regaining of something lost
4. the extraction of useful substances from waste

rebirth:
1. a revival or renaissance
2. a second or new birth
Think about it.

AA for the Un-Addicted

Have you heard about the new 12 step program for non-addicts? I can just see it now...

“Uhh, hello, my name is Bob, and I am not addicted to anything. But I have a few hang ups.”

Check this out:

Life’s Healing Choices: The Non-Addicted Version of Celebrate Recovery
christianresearchnetwork.com

The thing is, Celebrate Recovery is pretty much the same thing as the 12 steps of AA. So now RW and friends are saying that everyone really needs to take this recovery class (according to them, we are all in “recovery”???).

You can listen to RW at lifeshealingchoices.com explain how hurts and hang ups are now in the same category as ‘habits’ (addictions?).

Since they can't bring themselves to come out and say the negative "S" word (sin), maybe they should just call this new thing they have invented - HAHA (Hurts And Hang-ups Anonymous).

Oh, and here's the book.

Life’s Healing Choices: Rick Warren Bends The Beatitudes For a Better Life

I guess the questions is - are we truly healed by the choices and steps we make, or by the life changing power of the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ?

It's the Priniciple of the Thing

I use BibleGateway.com alot. It’s where I go to look up Bible verses, sometimes 10 times a day. But something has changed.

Today I learned that they have an on-line store and they sell a certain book that I strongly oppose. Can you see it just peaking out from behind the other books here? And so, because they sell this book (here), which is so entirely inconsistent with the Bible, while their website is supposed to be totally about the Bible, I am wondering if I want to use this resource or link to it anymore. Not that it will matter to them one bit. It's just the principle of the thing. I can't promote a website that sells this book.

According to their blog, the biblegateway store opened on Oct. 8, which is around the same day I noticed the format looked different somehow. But that's not the only thing. I noticed something else. It's the advertising.

For example, I clicked on Key Word Search to find verses about the new heaven and new earth. So I typed in these words in the search box:

new earth

Some advertising for a book came up. I wouldn't have believed it unless I had seen it. Okay, let me tell you which book and what kind of google advertising came up...

Hmmm. All this on Bible Gateway. Okay, so they're just automatic google ads. But I don't remember seeing that kind of thing there before - mind you, there's a lot of things I don't remember. Nevertheless, it's there now.

Just to put my mind at ease, I think I'll mosy on over to blueletterbible.org for reference from now on. They don't sell "that book", and 20% of their profits go to evangelism and the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ around the world. Looks like a good thing to link to.

Is evil a “thing” or the “absence of good”?

Here's a very interesting Q&A:
The Origin Of Evil

I received a great question this week. A regular visitor wanted to know, is evil a “thing” or the “absence of good”? The writer went on to say, “I understand how evil entered creation via the fall, but it seems to me that something (evil) that had never existed before suddenly came to be.”

It seems to her that this thing we call evil which didn’t exist in God’s perfect creation had to have an origin.

“Was that Satan?” she asked. “Did he/does he have a form of destructive de-creative power to bring something to be that wasn’t?”

In essence, did Satan “create” evil? Let’s find out.

“Where the Wild Things Are” Author tells parents to go to hell

Well now, isn't this just so NOT lovely - the latest scary thing for kids to watch...

Maurice Sendak tells parents to go to hell
The Mommy Files (www.sfgate.com)

*On October 16 (this Friday) the movie version of Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" opens in theaters. It's rated PG.

See the movie trailer here:

http://wherethewildthingsare.warnerbros.com/
(My computer froze on this website, by the way, so I watched it at youtube here.)

The special effects look very good, but in light of what the author said, is this a good thing to take your small kids to see? (The book was for kids aged 4-8.) Some say it depends on your child, but I say your small child's heart must be guarded by you, parents.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

What happened to the global warming thing?

Speaking of the world...what has happened to the global warming thing?
This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998.

But it is true. For the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures...

God did not Create the World, says Wolde

So there's this respected Bible scholar named Wolde who says God didn't actually make the world...
October 8 - God is not the Creator, claims academic

Professor Ellen van Wolde, a respected Old Testament scholar and author, claims the first sentence of Genesis "in the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth" is not a true translation of the Hebrew.

She claims she has carried out fresh textual analysis that suggests the writers of the great book never intended to suggest that God created the world -- and in fact the Earth was already there when he created humans and animals.

She said she eventually concluded the Hebrew verb "bara", which is used in the first sentence of the book of Genesis, does not mean "to create" but to "spatially separate".

She said: "It meant to say that God did create humans and animals, but not the Earth itself."
More HERE @ www.understandthetimes.org.

Wait a minute there, Professor Wolde - sounds like the whole rest of the Bible tells us who created the world. I think you are making mole hills out of mountains. Here are just a few verses for starters...

Exodus 20:11
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

2 Kings 19:15
And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth.

Nehemiah 9:6
Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.

Psalm 121:2
My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

Psalm 146:5,6
Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God:
Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever:

Isaiah 45:12
I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.

Isaiah 45:18
For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

Jeremiah 10:12
He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.

Jeremiah 27:5
I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me.

Acts 4:24
And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:

Acts 17:24
God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

Revelation 10:6
And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:

Revelation 14:7
Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

~ ~ ~

Hmmm. Looks to me like throughout pretty much the whole Bible the underlying theme is that God created the world. Everyone who says it isn't so will one day worship the One who said it is so. Why not just agree with Him now and save yourself a lifetime of futile arguing?

Some things the Bible tells us about deception

I read two very timely things the other day. One is a very long thing and talks about what we can learn from the Bible regarding deception and how to deal with spiritual deceivers. It says that while "we need to be able to clearly and biblically enlighten believers who express an interest in the mega-personalities of television, book, and Internet fame whose materials are readily available but with whom we rarely come into personal, face-to-face contact"..." It is far more likely that the most dangerous spiritual deceivers we will have to deal with in the course of our everyday life is the wolf in sheep’s clothing trying to make inroads in our local church." This interesting interpretation from the book of Isaiah on deceivers can be found here:

Dealing with Spiritual Deceivers (moriel.org)

Then there was this very short but good thing I read about how the Bible doesn't say the world will be converted to Christ and get better as the gospel goes out (as many of today's Christians are believing), but that "evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived". That one can be read here:

Do something worthy of persecution

Exclusive: Dave Welch challenges 'sensitive pastors and young evangelicals' on holiness
By Dave Welch

At the risk of offending all the sensitive pastors and young evangelicals who are so anxious not to be the "Religious Right," I would like to propose that it is time they do something worthy of persecution. I had the privilege of being in a meeting with Open Doors USA President Carl Moeller last week and heard about the incredible work they are doing to support our persecuted brethren in countries where it really means something.

With the passage – again – of hate-crimes legislation in Congress last week as Democrats deviously leeched it onto the Defense Appropriations bill, the noose continues to tighten on biblical Christianity in America....

History of the Walk to Emmaus

Very interesting reading here...
History of the Walk to Emmaus

The Emmaus Movement in the United Methodist Church has its ancestry in the Roman Catholic Cursillo. In Spanish, "Cursillo" is a very common word, derived from 'Curso,' which means "little course," something that is done in a few days rather than in weeks or months. The term Cursillo connotes the idea of intensity, of doing a great deal in very little time. The Walk to Emmaus is an adaptation of the Roman Catholic Cursillo (pronounced cur-SEE-o) Movement, which originated in Spain in 1949. Cursillo de Cristianidad means "little course in Christianity." The original Cursillo leaders designed the program to empower persons to transform their living and working environments into Christian environments....

Sacred Ecumenical Travels and Roads to Contemplative Spiritual Formation

I noticed a book the other day called Sacred Travels - Recovering the Ancient Practice of Pilgrimage by Christian George (foreword by Calvin Miller). It's about travelling the globe and visiting "historical places where Christian faith shaped entire civilizations." The author draws the reader to rediscover an ancient practice - the spiritual discipline of the religious pilgrimage that leads to soul transformation. He tracks the footsteps of men like Luther to Spurgeon and travels to places like Iona and Assisi, to gain a better understanding of God's inner work in pilgrims, past and present. No doubt this is a fascinating book for those who love to travel vicariously to various places of Christian heritage through the eyes of another, but what else will the reader learn from this 'sacred' road?

Here are a few more things in the book...
Come with Christian as he breaks bread with Benedictines in Ireland and worships with the Taizé community in France. Experience the transforming power of spiritual pilgrimage. And discover what it means to be a pilgrim as you follow God wherever he leads.

Okay, so as interesting as this book may seem, what kind of spiritual transformation might one receive from connecting with Benedictine monks, and chanting by candle light with the ecumenical community of Taize?

An endorsement by the very contemplative Karen Mains (hungrysouls.org) gives us a hint:
"Christian George resurrects the sadly neglected Christian practice of the pilgrimage, saying in effect that not only do we travel to know the world better, we need to take spiritual journeys in order to learn more about ourselves."
-www.ivpress.com, Karen Mains (of www.hungrysouls.org)
So then, is a spiritual pilgrimage all about...us?

Another endorser of this book is the contemplative Heather Zempel, who says:
Three cheers for Christian George for digging up this important spiritual discipline and re-imagining it for emerging generations . . . He demonstrates from personal experience the life-changing potential and spiritually transformative power of sacred travel.
-www.ivpress.com, Heather Zempel
(threadsmedia.com/store/studies/sacred-roads/)
Sacred travel? I understand that these people are coming from the contemplative spiritual formation end of the perspective, where it's all about finding sacred spaces, experiencing the presence of God, and knowing your true self, and that divine spark within. (Not to mention that also in this book are quotes from Richard Foster and the Common Book of Prayer etc.) But here's the surprising thing...another endorser for this book is Warren Wiersbe! Here's what he says:
"If you are weary of 'religious fast food' and of competing on the 'fast track,' then slow down and walk awhile with Christian George. You will discover the richness of the authentic pilgrim life. This is a stimulating guidebook for pilgrims who are serious about making progress in the things that matter most."
-www.ivpress.com, Warren Wiersbe
This is somewhat disappointing - and not to make a huge deal about this, but the point here is this. There is such a slippery subtlety afoot these days as spiritual disciplines, spiritual formation, and contemplative prayer makes ecumenical inroads within the protestant church. The line is getting blurrier, the common ground becoming more acceptable. Yes, we are all on level ground before the cross, but does that involve making a pit stop for the richness of the Catholic Eucharist experience, or an interfaith community chant here and there? Is this becoming so accepted the even Bible believing Christians (and scholars) are beginning to think this pathway is the authentic and stimulating way to go? Seems to me like these sacred travels and roads and things all lead to the same thing - contemplative spirituality.

*Just a side note, but Heather Zempel (www.discipleshipgroups.blogspot.com) is another speaker with Mindy Caliguire at a Willow Creek event later this October (*click here to learn more about that and what kind of things Caliguire teaches - shocking, actually). Zempel, a likeable personality, has just come out with a brand new teaching series called Sacred Roads. See here: (threadsmedia.com/store/studies/sacred-roads/)
[These things all have common roots in the contemplative spiritual formation movement.]

Holiday

It’s time for that strange thing we do here in Canada every year around this time. Our American neighbours also do this, but not quite so early. Here in the Great White North we take pity on certain living things every October as the nights grow colder, such as the turkeys and the pumpkins, and even the apples, and we bring them indoors and warm them in our ovens. Then we eat them, and talk about the recipe books we have read and the things we have added to make them tastier than ever before. We also make arrangements of dead tree leaves and dead garden foliage, like corn husks and dried up flowers, as part of this celebration. And we place these on our tables and beside our front doors, and greatly admire them for some reason. When the holiday is over, we throw it all away, but in the meantime, we find that doing these things are wonderful, meaningful ways to celebrate all the things we are thankful for in our great country.

And now, I look forward to spending a great deal of time over the next few days wearing oven mitts and reading recipe books, and thus I will be unable to type things on the computer until next week.

So, to all my fellow Canadians who all have so much to be thankful for -

Happy Thanksgiving, eh?

Latest Global Things Bell's Fav Author is up to

Remember this guy that author Rob Bell says to take three months to read? I have the book where he says that (Velvet Elvis, p 192). Well now look at what he is up to...

Global Spirituality Event and Ken Wilber (The Author Rob Bell Loves!)
www.crosstalkblog.com

Get this - Ken Wilber and friends will be setting out on a five year journey to find their Unique Selves through integrated perspectives of Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, New Spirituality, Integral Psychology, etc. AND...after finding their unique selves, they will be given help identifying the practices needed to uncover their deepest and truest Self.

You know, I could save them all a lot of time and just tell them they are all probably going to end up meditating on their uniquely common navels. It's actually kind of sad when you think about these searching souls who are seeking in the wrong direction. But since Rob Bell seems to truly admire Ken Wilber (and thus far has not repented of his recommendation), I can only wonder if Bell will also be recommending this journey to his devoted followers and fans. More importantly, I wonder what it will take for the youth pastors and teachers in Christian highschools who are using Rob Bell videos, and Christian book store owners who are profiting from Bell's books and things, to stop spreading his influence and start practicing some biblical discernment and recognize this compromise for what it is before our Holy God.

Note: Amongst McLaren’s usual social gospel plugs and non-literal interpretations of the Bible are the same old things he's said before, such as Hell not being a literal place (a definite ‘devil-ish’ thought since of course Satan would want you to think that, silly! Like, duh!). Even so, my last visit to our local Bible book store sadly revealed that they are still selling a broad selection of McLaren's books (these used to be under the Christian Living section but are now in their new Spiritual Formation section next to the usual contemplative authors who are promoting their New Age mysticism, even though there are still some emerging church and border-line contemplative authors displayed in the Christian Living section...ah, what a mess...I could go on with this rant...but I'll stop right there).

Some Things about Evolution vs. Creation

Does it matter if you believe in evolution or creation? What about theistic evolution? Does it matter if we take the whole Bible literally, or only the areas where we agree with it? Things Parents can do to Combat Evolutionary Indoctrination

Here is some good advice:
Parents—Don’t Leave Teaching to the Church

The church is not the only place our children should be taught biblical truth. Parents can do many practical things to combat the evolutionary indoctrination their children face.

In addition to ensuring that their children receive meaningful instruction from church, parents are responsible to build a biblical worldview in their children on a daily basis.

Parents, you can become more involved in many ways.

Red Letter Christians

RED-LETTER CHRISTIANS: NEO-MARXISM IN THE CHURCH?
By Jan Markell
www.olivetreeviews.org
October 5, 2009

In many Bibles, all the words of Jesus are in red. There is nothing wrong with that. But something is wrong when Leftist Christians or so-called Christians want to mute the words of Paul and other writers and only follow Jesus' words. They call themselves "red-letter Christians."

They feel it is convenient to blot out the words of Paul on homosexuality and focus in on the good deeds Jesus talks about. Most are pacifists who reject an "eye for an eye" (Leviticus 24:19-20). They focus on Jesus' words about helping the poor, ministering to "the least of these" (Matthew 25:40), loving our enemies, etc. That justifies abandoning hundreds, even thousands of condemning verses in the Bible they choose to wish away....

Teaching Kids the Bible

Teaching Children the Bible Just Got Easier

TEANECK, New Jersey, Oct. 3 /Christian Newswire/ -- Combining the latest in 3D digital computer graphic art along with short snippets of easy-to-understand Biblical narratives, Creation By Design released a series of Bible trading cards that will change the Biblical "edu-tertainment" world. "My Bible Cards" is designed to help parents and educators teach children the Bible without compromising on the Word of God and the latest art trends in the trading card industry.

Banned Books Week

Amer. Library Assn. 'trumps up' book-banning

A prominent pro-family group says "Banned Books Week," going on now, is intended to intimidate parents.

The week-long observance is sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA), which says the purpose is to protest censorship and celebrate open access to viewpoints that not everyone agrees with. "Intellectual freedom -- the freedom to access information and express ideas, even if the information and ideas might be considered unorthodox or unpopular -- provides the foundation for Banned Books Week," says the ALA website....

Answers for some tough Things

Here's a tough issue to tackle...
Does Church Need Change?

What can church and parents do to stop our young people from leaving?

Mike Matthews, editor of Answers magazine, spoke with Al Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, about one of the most pressing questions in the church today: “With so many children leaving the church by their twenties, what are we doing wrong, and what solutions can the church and parents implement?”

Another Poll (see update)

A reader has asked a good question:

So far I have not met anyone who knows of someone or has/ had a case of the swine flu. Has anyone else?

Vote on the poll (it's two questions, so be sure to vote on both). I'll leave it up for a month.

These are the possible symptoms (not everyone with H1N1 will necessarily have all these symptoms):
  • fever
  • headache
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • runny nose
  • extreme fatigue
  • loss of appetite
  • muscle aches
  • nausea, vomiting

(Looks like just about anyone could have it, so I guess your guess is as good as mine.)

I read some statistics today - don't know how accurate they are as they are from an e-mail forward. Do you know that that odds of being struck by lightening are 1 in 71,000? Death by car crash - 5,000 to 1, death by falling oout of bed - 2,000,000 to 1, drowning in bathtub, 807,000 to 1. Odds of dying from Swine flu - 8,000,000 to 1. The regular flu kills over 34,000 Americans a year. So far, 1154 people have died world wide from H1N1. So really, it's not a big deal. Makes you wonder why the worldwide focus on such a small thing. Some say it's just another big business, like the cure for cancer.

So vote on the poll. It should be interesting to see the results.

Hearing Things?

A friend sent me this yesterday, and today it's all over the internet.

No you are not hearing things. They are actually praying to Obama here:

Prayer to Obama - Idolatrous Liturgy replaces "Hear Us O Lord" with "Deliver Us Obama" and "Hear Us Obama" elevating Obama to the seat of God or Messiah.
