Test All ThingsMore here:
One such command is, “Test all things; hold fast what is good” (1 Thess. 5:21). How do believers “test all things”? One of the greatest gifts given to us by God is a reliable standard of divine truth through the closed canon of Scripture. The Holy Spirit, who authored the Scripture (2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:20-21), is not schizophrenic. It is impossible for the Holy Spirit to say one thing at one time and something contradictory another time. In other words, it is an impossibility for the Holy Spirit to reveal something in Scripture and then something entirely different through a human teacher, prophet, theologian, doctrine, philosophy, etc. Thus, believers can protect themselves from the apostasy that is so prevalent in our day by simply comparing everything we hear with the eternal Word of God. Those items taught to us that are consistent with what God has already revealed in Scripture are to be accepted and embraced while those things that are inconsistent with scriptural truth are to be rejected and discarded.

Proving or testing all things through scripture is indeed the ultimate test of any doctrine or teaching.
Unfortunately we have people like Eugene Petersen and others producing abominations like "The Message" and peddling it as scripture to millions of Christians.
This being the case they have a faulty guide, and are ripe for deception and apostasy...
If one believes that in the last days that false prophets and false teachers will be among us, why is it so hard to accept that many of those prophets and teachers will hold seminary degrees and doctorates in theology...
2Peter 2:1
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
Right on Rusty. Regarding The Message, it's like the old fraudulent bill analogy - the eye must be trained to recognize the original in order to spot the counterfeit. The Message is a counterfeit Bible, and not qualified to be used as the plumbline to test all things.
I guess it's unfathomable for so many to question those with Bible degrees is because it goes against reason. Besides, who would have enough guts to make an appointment to talk to the president of a Bible seminary (for example) and confront him on such issues?
True Carla..I think many in high academic positions have the intelligence to see the issues involved, however they are so invested and entangled with publishers, high profile Church personalities and christian entertainers that the price of going against the flow would be too much to pay...
Its the same with many scientists who see the fallacies in the evolution theory. The price to stand up and say the truth would be extremely high. They would have say goodbye to the money and prestige they had gained by promoting a lie...
Reminds me of the rich young ruler who went away very sorrowful ,because he was very rich...
Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich. Luke 18:22-23
Ah...the cost of choosing such a path is indeed high.
