Here are some things they are saying about the Cross these days...
Brian McLaren says the Cross is false advertising for God.
His friend Marcus Borg has said that the worst distortion of the Cross is the doctrine of substitutionary atonement, and the "Jesus died for our sin" interpretation (that the whole purpose of Jesus was to die a bloody death for us). Borg was reported to have said that this view of the cross was not the view of the early church, but originated less than 1000 years ago with Anselm of Canterbury. Some churches say the Cross is alienating and are removing it, and offering in its place an inclusive Christianity...

Meanwhile, one Swedish scholar is refuting the history of crucifixion and saying there is little evidence that Jesus died on a cross (kind of like the JW's view). Here are a few things to read about that...
Was Jesus crucified on a cross, pole, or stake?

Did Jesus really die on the cross?

But listen up all you foolish cross bashers. The Bible tells us that Jesus was crucified and died on a Cross, and that the preaching of the Cross is foolishness - but only to those who are perishing. Therefore, all those who remove, reject, mock, distort and deny the power of the message of the Cross are perishing powerless fools.
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18
Thank you Jesus for the power of Cross!
And speaking of powerful music...
