Wake Up! The Shack is Burning Down!

Here's something about 'that book' by Joseph Farah...
The most popular book in so-called "Christian" bookstores over the last two or three years is one called "The Shack," a paperback novel by Paul Young that represents unmitigated heresy in its view of salvation, an anti-biblical portrait of the Creator of the universe as our buddy and a thoroughly paganistic message that there really are no consequences for sin.

How a book like this could be sustained high on the nation's best-seller lists for two solid years, mainly by "Christians," is a profound indictment of the American church and its spiritual and intellectual sophistication.

Worse yet, hundreds or thousands churches and Bible study groups have used "The Shack" as a teaching tool.

That's why I jumped at the opportunity to publish an enlightened critique of the this dangerous and spiritually subversive book called "Burning Down 'The Shack: How the 'Christian' Bestseller Is Deceiving Millions,'" by James De Young....

Why Some Christian Leaders and Scholars Don't Believe the Book of Genesis

Here's a very interesting thing...
Many people think that Bible scholars and other Christian leaders or educators who accept millions of years and hold to the gap theory or day-age view or framework hypothesis or a localized Noachian Flood do so because of careful attention to the Biblical text in the original languages.1

However, the following old-earth proponents’ own words indicate that evolutionary theories about the history and age of the earth and universe are the determining factor influencing their understanding of Genesis 1-11. Error-prone and, in many cases, erroneous scientific interpretations about the unobserved past appear to have a higher authority for them than Scripture does. Consider these statements, made by Christian scholars who all avowedly affirm that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God...

*By the way, Dr. David Hocking is doing an interesting series right now called The Days of Creation that you can listen to here.

From the Book of Luke

You may think that you have the most amazing pastor, but I'm sorry to tell you that ours is the best. He walks the talk, and faithfully teaches from the Word of God, which does its work in our hearts and lives. What can I say...this Sunday was no different as he really blessed us once again. We are going through the book of Luke, and we are in chapter 11. Here are part of my notes from yesterday's sermon, which I found so relevant that they are way too important to file away on my pile of bulletins, never to see the light of day again. So here is a link to Luke 11 - if you are hungry for some truth, please read the verses and follow along...

Luke 11

verses 14-20
-Satan copies, replicates, makes things worse, not better (Moses vs. Pharoah's magicians - they didn't make the plagues go away, they just copied them)

v.21-22
-Satan is strong, but Jesus is the stronger one in v. 22 (greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world)

v.23 He who is not with Me is against me
-neutral ground is dangerous ground
-you’ve either responded to the light or hardened yourself to it
-putting it off is insanity
-don’t fool around with something as important as eternity
-don’t play games
-you might say “I’m not against him” but if you are not going with Him you are against Him
-you have no guarantee that you will have another minute!

v. 25-26
-personal desire to reform does not last long
-you can clean up a pig and dress him up, but he'll still go roll in the mud because he's still a pig with a pig nature...he needs a new nature to be a new pig
-if you used to be the place where demons resided, they will come back to check out their old habitat
-the last state is worse than the first

v. 28
-hear AND obey – that’s how people will see whose side you are on

v. 29 -32
-the evil generation doesn’t want to hear the word, they want more
-Ninevah heard, believed and repented (the sign of Jonah - Matthew 12:40)
-the one sign is always – the cross and the resurrection !!!
-that is the sign
-you can’t preach the gospel with out the cross (and look how many are trying to do that today)

-the Queen of Sheba went out of her way to listen to the wisdom of Solomon yet you have the Son of God where all wisdom is found
-Nineveh listened to a selfish unloving prophet and they repented
-we have Jesus, His death and resurrection, knowledge and privilege – with it comes great responsibility

Some questions this leaves us with...
  • Who are you going way out of your way to listen to?
  • Are you looking for a sign other than the cross and the resurrection?
  • How are you living your life today?
  • Whose side are you on?
  • Have you repented?
This is SERIOUS stuff, and it distresses me to see how many around me are on dangerous ground, having hardened their hearts to the truth. I just realized I didn't write down nearly everything I should have, but even so, may the living Word do its work in all who happen to study this.

Books The Resurgence Recommends

A few weeks ago I followed a link to The Resurgence (the site of Mark Driscoll). I don't know much about it, other than the fact that it's the fourth most popular religion blog on the internet, according to technorati. As I was skimming their recommended great books list, I noticed with great interest that they have included (near the top of their list) a book I had just recently looked into.

I'm not exactly sure why a Christian site like The Resurgence would recommend Eat That Frog! 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time as a church coaching and leadership development book. It might look like just another self help book, but being from a world view point, it certainly offers no biblical wisdom or insight. Not only that, new age author Brian Tracy writes in the preface that he has immersed himself in the works of Peter Drucker and Steven Covey (New Age Mormon author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People).

I can see them perhaps overlooking one such book, but lo and behold, also on the recommended list right after Eat That Frog is ~gasp~ The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, by Mormon Stephen R. Covey!!?!

Over at Apologetics Index we read that this book is the author's way of conveying ideas about centering one's life in the god of Mormonism...
For those Christians, particularly leaders in the Church, using Covey's material, please note that in order to properly follow these beliefs one must be rooted in submission to the authority of the LDS Church and its god. If you do otherwise he considers you as opposing the Lord, led by another spirit - the adversary, and following an incorrect map...
Apart from its Mormon roots, Covey's products and programs are problematic for the Christian due to Covey's promotion of New Age teachers and practices. Covey is well versed in the New Age teachings and practices of its adherents because he often runs in the same circles as they, appearing on panels and at seminars.

-The Shifting Paradigms of Stephen Covey
http://www.apologeticsindex.org/c12.html
It gets worse if you read the rest of the article at the above link. You would think that a well known Christian ministry would be much more careful about the books they promote.

~sigh...what else is new~

Besides more self-help motivational and 'vision casting' books (for research on how vision casting is a way of transforming the church away from Sola Scriptura, click here), The Resurgence also recommends books by contemplative authors such as Dallas Willard, Gary Thomas, and Richard Foster's Celebration of Discipline. I've almost come to expect to see these popular books everywhere these days, but even so, as I continued to skim down the list on The Resurgence, what a surprise to see the following church leadership book recommendation by Mark Driscoll:
Recommended Reading: Church Leadership
by Mark Driscoll
Preaching Pastor at Mars Hill Church

Peterson, Eugene H. The Contemplative Pastor: Returning to the Art of Spiritual Direction
• Peterson, Eugene H. Working the Angles: The Shape of Pastoral Integrity

In Working the Angles, the 'third angle' that Peterson writes about is Spiritual Direction (Being a Spiritual Director, Getting Spiritual Direction and Practicing Spiritual Direction). In the introduction he writes:
What are the actual means by which I carry out this pastoral vocation, this ordained ministry, this professional commitment to God’s word…The answer among the masters whom I consult doesn’t change: a trained attentiveness to God in prayer, in Scripture reading, in spiritual direction. (pg. 16, Working the Angles)
By this, does Eugene Peterson mean contemplative spirituality?

I believe so, and Peterson's other books have revealed his contemplative bent. For example, on page 90 of Eat This Book, he wrote that repeating a passage over and over slowly using the Lectio Divina method is "a way of reading that guards against depersonalizing the text into an affair of questions and answers, definitions and dogmas," like some "pathetic religion scholar." It is shocking to read that today's best selling Bible paraphrase has been written by someone with such a view of the study of God's Word, but it is equally as surprising to see how many pastors and Christian ministries are recommending his books and things.

Blogging about the very popular Mark Driscoll and his promotion of Eugene Peterson and contemplative spirituality probably won’t make one bit of difference. In fact, it most likely won't help for anyone to critique or try to contact Mr. Driscoll regarding these books he recommends, as he has already said that he won’t read or respond to "internutters" (critics)...
What To Do With Internutters?

Mark Driscoll
Preaching Pastor at Mars Hill Church

1) Don’t respond
2) Don’t have contact
3) Get someone else involved
4) Don’t let your family hear the criticism.
5) this is a test

In the meantime, my thought of the day is, how will any Christian website ministry be accountable for what they promote if they don't listen or respond to the concerns of discerning Christians? Once again, as in so many cases, it's left to the sheep to be discerning.

The Resurgence may be a widely used religion blog containing the writings of many of today's popular pastors, and they do recommend some very good books, but since there seems to be a lack of discernment regarding some of the books they recommend, if you are one of its readers, proceed with caution.

Procrastination Book

Besides getting some business and books and things in order this month, one of the reasons I booked some time off from my blog was to try and check off a good portion of things I had listed to get done on my very long procrastinator's list. One thing that felt oh so very good to finally do was to write some long overdue letters to our Gospel for Asia kids. One of the little guys had written me 7 times already! He's the one that always says he is praying for us. When we got the latest letter from another one of our GFA kids who said he was waiting to get a letter from us, I finally decided I could put it off no longer. Some very excited kids will finally be getting some letters and nice post cards in the mail.

While I was trying to stay on task and get the other things done (a hard thing for a lifelong habitual procrastinator), I happened to come across a book on...procrastination! Amazing. Thinking that perhaps this could help, I browsed through this book called Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time by Brian Tracy. There were a few helpful tidbits. Like, if you have two difficult important huge tasks you've been putting off, start with the biggest, and work your way down, and don't be tempted to do the little things first. So I went with that advice, and it worked very well. (But alas, I skipped a few so I'm still not finished my list.) The book also talked about things I didn't need or want to know, like how to maximize your 'personal powers' (whatever those are), the Law of Three, and the Pareto Principle (80/20 rule). I also noticed that the author quoted Steven Covey (New Age/Mormon, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People), and Peter Drucker. In fact, in the preface Tracy states that he has immersed himself in their works. Wow - immersion is a big deal. Curious, I thought I would check out further who Brian Tracy is.

An article at Healthy New Age told me that...
Brian has authored over 23 of Americas' leading books on the development of the human potential.
During this time he has also trained over 2 million people in 23 countries. Some of his clients include IBM, Verizon Wireless, Bank of America and thousands of people around the world.

-Brian Tracy - Secrets to Become A Millionaire
www.healthynewage.com/Brian-Tracy.htm
Okay, so he's popular, successful and has written lots of books - but what's with the New Age website? So I got to wondering if there was a spiritual side to any of his other books. I vaguely remembered seeing his name somewhere before, so I checked out Lighthouse Trails Research, and sure enough, they said that in motivational speaker Brian Tracy's book, Maximum Achievement (pg. 179, chapter six, "The Master Power"), Tracy says "many of the greatest thinkers who have ever lived have stood in awe before this power and have written about it."

What is 'this power' is he talking about?

He continues, "Madame Blavatsky, the Russian theosophist, called it, 'the secret doctrine.'" Blavatsky's book, The Secret Doctrine, is one of the foundational books, which under girds the New Age and the new spirituality (see: www.blavatskyarchives.com).
[Source: Lighthouse Trails Research]

Eeks! I was getting advice from a self help book author who looked to this power?

Well that got my attention, blog break or no blog break. As I further explored Tracy's beliefs, I found that he also teaches meditation (which, by the way, is no different than the meditation techniques taught in "Christian" contemplative spiritual formation). Check this out:
Method of Solitude

To get the full benefit of your periods of solitude, you must sit quietly for at least 30 to 60 minutes at a time. If you haven’t done it before, it will take the first 25 minutes or so for you to stop fidgeting and moving around. You’ll almost have to hold yourself physically in your seat. You’ll have an almost irresistible desire to get up and do something. But you must persist.
Solitude requires that you sit quietly, perfectly still, back and head erect, eyes open, without cigarettes, candy, writing materials, music or any interruptions whatsoever for at least 30 minutes. An hour is better.
Become completely relaxed, and breathe deeply. Just let your mind flow. Don’t deliberately try to think about anything. The harder you “don’t try,” the more powerfully it works. After 20 or 25 minutes, you’ll begin to feel deeply relaxed. You’ll begin to experience a flow of energy coming into your mind and body. You’ll have a tremendous sense of well-being. At this point, you’ll be ready to get the full benefit of these moments of contemplation.
The incredible thing about solitude is that if it is done correctly, it works just about 100 percent of the time.
…When you listen to yourself and act on what you hear inside, you are setting out on the road to personal greatness.

-Accessing Your Inner Guidance–Part Two
http://www.briantracy.com/blog/general/accessing-your-inner-guidance-part-two/
So much for procrastination help. I wasn't going to seek any more advice from this book or author. I decided instead to ask the Lord for help, and so far, He's helped me stick to my tasks and finish a good half of my list, which is amazing considering how daunting it was. I've realized that it will be an ongoing process of just doing a little bit every day, and I can still take some time to keep More Books & Things going.

Which reminds me, there's another reason why am I blogging about this book, which I will blog about later (and it has nothing to do with procrastination). Stay tuned...

Borg's Book and beyond...

Ugh. No kidding. The Borg has written a fiction book...

BOOK REVIEW: Putting Away Childish Things, a Tale of Modern Faith by Marcus J. Borg
www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com

It appears that this is a classic case of fiction with a message, but a spiritually dangerous one, as this looks like a book that will lead readers away from truth. This is no surprise, as Borg seems to be a key force in the emerging “New Paradigm” of Christian faith. This is alarming, as he has said the following about Christianity:
"I affirm, along with many others, that the major enduring religions of the world are all valid and legitimate....I don’t think that one of these is better than the other. You could even say they are all divinely given paths to the sacred. To be Christian in this kind of context means to be deeply committed to one’s own tradition, even as one recognizes the validity of other traditions."

[Source: MARCUS BORG CHRISTIAN?]
To make things worse, Marcus Borg says the Bible is...
* ...a human product, not a divine product...

* As a human product, the Bible is not “absolute truth” or “God’s revealed truth,” but relative and culturally conditioned…the Bible tells us how our spiritual ancestors saw things – not how God sees things.”

[Source: MARCUS BORG AND ROB BELL: THE BIBLE IS NOT A DIVINE PRODUCT WITH DIVINE FINAL AUTHORITY?]
An even MORE alarming thing, for those who may not know, is that Borg seems to be on the same theological page as Brian McLaren...

This can only bring me to conclude that there is a good possibility that those attending the Evangelism and Transformation in a Secular Society Conference in Victoria, B.C. (Canada) this weekend are in grave danger of having their minds assimilated by the code language of the Borg which may manifest itself via the lips of emerging invasion representative, Brian McLaren. Resistance, without the help of the Holy Spirit, may be futile. (1)

A New Kind of Canadian Christian Conference

This weekend, starting this evening, Christians in the southwest corner of Canada who have been disillusioned with the traditional church as they have perceived it will be pursuing wider horizons by attending a new kind of conference. Whether these pleasant, well meaning folks have read some intriguing books about a 'new kind' of Christianity, or simply feel it’s time to open their minds and broaden their spiritual outlook, the unfortunate thing is that while it may appear that God allows us this freedom, they are not heeding what He has already told us in His Word about this kind of choice…
13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. 15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves... ~ Matthew 7
Some will travel the broad new path in ignorance, some in disobedience, but the Bible tells us that God Himself will send a strong delusion to those who don’t receive the love of the truth (2 Thess. 2:10,11), so that they will believe the lie. Because it's a serious thing to be given over by God to a lie (Romans 1:18-32), and a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God (Hebrews 10:31), please pray for all those attending this weekend's conference. It's called Evangelism and Transformation in a Secular Society Conference with Brian McLaren and Steve Bell (May 28th- 29th, 2010) at Christ Church Cathedral in Victoria, B.C., which the brochure (pdf) from the Anglican Diocese of British Columbia (www.bc.anglican.ca) calls an ecumenical conference.

http://thewearypilgrim.typepad.com/the_weary_pilgrim/2010/05/brian-mclaren-christ-church-cathedral-may-28th29th-victoria-bc.html
I am going to post the following links to a few basic reviews and critiques of Brian McLaren's work, not because I simply don't like the things that he says (as if my opinion matters), but with the hope that even one person attending this conference will stumble across this blog and re-evaluate the broad pathway they are traveling. On the last day, God won’t judge us based on what we think or like or don’t like, but on the basis of His truth. The plumbline is His Word and His truth (Jesus is the way, the truth and the life).

So the first thing that should alert those who are going to this conference is that Brian McLaren is among those who are the enemies of the cross, and has totally left biblical Christianity. This is from a review of McLaren's newest book:
"McLaren continues to redefine the Christian faith in this latest effort, which follows up his book Everything Must Change. Under McLaren’s pen Christianity as defined in the Bible is now totally unrecognizable. Without question McLaren has walked away from biblical Christianity, so much so that even Scott McKnight writes a semi-negative review in Christianity Today (March, 2010)."

Finally, as John MacArthur says...
"...the father of lies is working to destroy the saving sanctifying truth that God has given to us in His Word and in His Son.

The effects of false teaching have been devastating and damning. That is why the Bible calls them damnable, or destructive heresies which lead men to destruction. And I believe that as we get closer to the coming of Christ, these deceptions, lies and falsehoods, misrepresentations will increase.

Now any servant of the Lord then must be aware of false teachers. Any servant of the Lord must be warned about lies.

That is why in Acts 20 the Apostle Paul for three years night and day with tears warned the believers in Ephesus and the leaders in Ephesus of those who would come from among them and from outside of them with lies."

-The Danger of False Teaching
http://www.gty.org/Resources/Sermons/55-9
I've also been thinking these last few weeks how truly tragic it is that in our culture such a major focus and emphasis is placed on exercise, nutrition and physical fitness to increase our earthly longevity and possibly keep ourselves out of the emergency room or long term care facility (although these are good things, there is still no guarantee), yet so many are lax and easy going spiritually when it comes to straying over to the broad way that does not lead to eternal life. Jesus guaranteed us that there is a way that leads to life - but only one way, through Him (John 14:6).

Meanwhile, many well known names in the emerging church, such as McLaren, have been gradually redefining Christianity and diluting the truth to the point where the sacrificial atonement of Christ on the cross is now casually remixed with alternative theories, heaven and hell are no longer real places, and all paths lead to God (universalism).

Those who travel the broad path behind these men who have walked away from biblical Christianity are on equally dangerous ground. A huge shock awaits these followers when they eventually discover the agenda behind these men, and the distorted things they say about hell and the cross. I pray that when their eyes are opened to the truth, it will not be too late.

"Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame." Rev. 16:15

Blog Break

On that note, I'm going to be taking another necessary blog break for a while. In the meantime, here's some recommended reading...

There might be some encouraging things to think on by my very smart friend Pearl who has just built a brand new blog.

And if you haven't yet found this, there's some fantastically plausible, controversial, new fiction by my talented friend John, here:

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 - with more to be continued, I'm sure!

I'll be back when my very lengthy to do list of mountainous projects is all checked off.

Update:

It's really far too kind of you all to keeping checking back and asking when I will be back blogging. In answer to your questions, I'm hoping to have finished most of my massive to do list by the end of the month. Be back soon...

Checking out a few things about a Bible School

I’ve been looking into Briercrest (Saskatchewan) today as a favor for some friends who are wondering whether sending their daughter there to Bible school is an option. I had to be honest and tell them that I noticed that while there is probably lots of good stuff there, there is evidence of contemplative spiritual formation (1) and contemplative prayer being taught and encouraged. They also appear to have an acceptance of some emerging church things. So depending on what courses a student takes, they will probably come across these things somewhere – even if only in chapel events.

For example, on the Briercrest Library Research page, not only do they have a link to the new agey Leonard Sweet and The Ooze (www.theooze.com), an emergent site, they also link to CCWS - the Canadian Centre for Worship Studies (www.ccws.ca). This project of Briercrest Seminary is a collection of papers and resources on the history, theology, and practice of worship. I found their Ancient Practices quite revealing, as well as their resources page which links to Taize. Briercrest professor Dale Dirksen is the director and moderator of this CCWS project (2).

By the way, Briercrest has been listed on the Contemplative Colleges page at Lighthouse Trails Research for some time now.

Another thing I noticed is that someone on Briercrest's faculty taught one of the 'tracks' at SERVE this March...
Dr. Cal Macfarlane

Seminar 1 - Learning to Keep in Step with the Spirit: Lessons from the Potter's Wheel
Seminar 2 - Learning to Feed on Scripture: Nourishment for the Spiritual Journey
Seminar 3 - Learning to be Awake to God's Presence: Gratitude as the Heart of the Life of Prayer
Seminar 4 - Learning to Make Space for God: The Importance of Solitude and Silence as a Spiritual Discipline

Those sound like pretty common terms used in contemplative spirituality, but just to be sure I checked around and found he also says, regarding spiritual disciplines, that "Within the safety of these centuries old practices there is the freedom to discover the reality of God for oneself" (Cal Macfarlane, Beyond Me. Accompanying Adolescents on Their Spiritual Journey, Canadian Youth Workers Convention 2009). (3)

Given the circumstantial evidence, plus the testimony of a young lady who attended Youth Quake 2004 at Briercrest College, the theme of which was "Space Available," that had a "Sacred Space" event that included Taize worship, I told my friends that if they chose Briercrest for their daughter, she most likely would come across contemplative and emerging things, although I don't know that for sure.

So here's a question I'm throwing out there into blog land. Does anyone know more about Briercrest? And would you recommend it? Please either e-mail me or drop me a comment. Thanks.

The more things change, the more they are the same

The times, they are a changin'...or are they? If you read the following thing about the fall of Jerusalem and the patterns we see today, you'll see that as it was then, so it is now. And as goes the neighborhood in Africa and Southern California, so goes the neighborhood in our little corner of Canada. Looks like we are seeing a spiritual decline that is the same everywhere...
Bit by bit, biblical literacy has been undermined; little by little, one step at a time Christian integrity has been shattered. Gradually and irreversibly discernment has been eroded, preparing us for...the nice respectable face of Rick Warren who unashamingly declares his desire for a one world church and one billion foot soldiers which can only be achieved through unity with Rome, certain cults and other faiths.

Finally and more recently we have been exposed to what is known as the Emergent Church. The Emergent Church did not appear overnight but has primarily been an evolution of the Ecumenicism we have been observing and warning about for years. But now it has been manifest with insidious teachings that denigrate the cross such as substitutionary atonement along with the introduction of mystical Roman Catholic teachings and New age meditation techniques that are thoroughly alien to biblical Christianity.

The result on a city beleaguered by every wind of doctrine and led by spineless shepherds is an amalgamation of every man-made philosophy that has gone before, and who dare speak against it? Jeremiah was right when he said, “A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?” (Jer. 5:30-31, KJV)

Marx, Wallis and the Bible (UPDATED)

Here's quite a quote...especially in light of all the evangelical manifestos and covenants and things that have been passed around lately in the name of social justice, peace and civility and all that stuff...

It is ironic that men of the cloth endorse the views of Karl Marx who despised the Bible. Marx propounded his message and political outlook almost two millennia after the Bible was written. His outlook is not of the Bible.

That's from an eye opener of an article, written by a Rabbi, that popped up in my e-mail box today that I thought perhaps might interest a reader or two, and can be found here:
